Ds wants me to bike with him.

Ds wants me to get a bike so we can spend time together and ride. The problem is I don't have any road sense. I'm ok walking. But definitely not on the road I would probably cause an accident. I do have dyslexia I don't know if theres a link between and no on road sense.

That's nice he wants to do things with you though! I feel the pain, I HATE riding on the road, I'm not that great at hand signals and get stressed by the cars. But I like cycling on traffic free routes - have you got any near you? Round reservoirs, old railway lines etc, are often made into bike trails.

Do you drive? If so, pretty much follow what you've learnt from that - space needed, indication, following highway code in terms of when you need to wait etc.

I showed many dyslexic tendencies growing up (it didn't seem to be a recognised thing then), I just get certain things mixed up now. I'm OK cycling. Could you start off on some quiet residential roads? Also, if you give it ago, ask him about anything that isn't obvious to you.

Either way, it's really nice he wants to spend time with you. As they grow up, they often become a lot more independent, and spend less time with you.

No i don't drive. I can't with no road sense . I did try but I'm not safe on the roads.

Ask who? Do you mean ds. He's only 11.

Honestly I can't even do side roads

Edited

I forgot about hand signal i won't be able to take my hands of the handle bars.

Theres no traffic free routes I'm in a London a busy town. Only thing i can think of is to walk the bike to the park.

It's nice he wants to do that. Pushing a bike to the park and cycling there is a good compromise. Where are you in London? There are also quite a few off road cycling paths.

You couldn't strap on your helmet and wobble off down the A road as things stand, but perhaps a few lessons about being in traffic with a cycling trainer, and a bit of balance work, would make it possible, if you want to join your son on a bike ride.
I am unbalanced and wobbly myself for medical reasons, and it's not a nice feeling; it would be good if you can feel more stable even if you decide not to use a bike.

I can ride a bike in general I'm not wobbly.i can take one hand of if I was going straight but I couldn't do it turning a corner. I think i just contradicted myself. I don't think lessons would help. I would need the same road sense as in a car and i tried driving lessons alot and I'm just not safe on the road.

Do you not have any cycle tracks or anything near you?

TalonOfDuty · 17/09/2026 12:53

Could you manage a tricycle? A friend of mine had one as she didn't feel safe on two wheels.

Its not how many wheels its the road sense.

Ok but you said you couldn't take your hand off if you were going around a corner and a tricycle would help with that.
Tbh if you have no road sense and you don't think lessons would help then it's probably safest for everyone if you don't bike

I get what your saying a trike would allow me to signal. But it still doesn't give me road sense. I think i will walk a bike to the park and ride in the park that way I'm not letting ds down.

You signal before you turn, but it really sounds as if it would be dangerous to be honest, the roads are mental these days.

Fair enough. Best to stay off the roads if you can't get your head around traffic. There is always the park.
