What leafy houseplant could replace an orchid in a nice planter?

I’ve been given a few orchids over the years.. and cannot keep them alive. I also don’t actually like them, as I’m more of a large leafy/jungly plant person. I am absolutely fine with 90% of other indoor plants!!

I was given one in April and can’t keep it alive. I know the leaves look ok… but what alternative plant could I put in the lovely planter it’s in?

How do they die? That one has just flowered and will flower again next year. Get a money (jade) plant, they don’t flower and are resilient to bad treatment. Only need water when you see the leaves get soft. Can grow big. Easy to propagate.

That plant isn’t dead. Just keep giving it a drop of water and it’ll flower again next year.
Buy yourself a peace lily for a bit of leafyness in the meantime.

This is still alive! It’s just finished flowering. Take it out of the glass, cut down the spent flower stems, keep watering it and it will bloom again in a few weeks. Or pass it along to someone else if it’s really not your taste!

The trouble with these glass jars is they have no drainage, it’s very tricky to water without overwatering so many plants will just sit in a bog and eventually drown.

I’d suggest filling the glass with a candle or pretty indoor lights, then go and buy yourself a nice jungly plant in a proper plant pot :)

This sound like a great idea actually. I am also just so overwhelmed with life that I need some clear instructions ☺️

I don’t think that’s a suitable receptacle for most house plants as green leafy types need to spread outwards when they grow.

I agree with the above about a Jade plant or you could try a tradescantia plant or a spider plant. They’re both also fairly indestructible and easy to propagate.

Your orchid plant looks pretty healthy so if you water it lightly every 2-3 weeks, it will send out another flower stem. That’s what they do.

Edit to addd: Yes, a big church candle in the glass vase with some moss etc. will look lovely.

You could add some pebbles to the bottom and sit your plant pot on top to avoid the sitting in water problem

I have a house full of blooming orchids, but my trick is not to mess them - no slight waering, drown the entire pot, let it soak, drain and then leave it alone until you see that the roots going silver and shrivelled. Anywhere between week or 2 weeks.
But take it out of that planter - it seems to be sitting in moss all the time, this means it will not properly dry out between waterings and will rot.

I wouldn't put any houseplants in that tbh, it looks more like a vase to me!I
I'd replace it with a nice fern (My answer to any blank surface space is another fern though!).😄

I know the feeling @Rhubarbsoap! As it happens I've written a book on moth orchids so in this area of life at least, I can provide clear instructions 😆

Good luck with the plants, I hope they provide a bit of relief from the overwhelm Flowers

Thanks posters.
I may just do a candle. It came in that vase and I see what you mean about no drainage.

I love ferns and can keep them alive 💪🏼
