What is the thing people sometimes shout during “Sweet Caroline”?

I’ve been speaking to some friends tonight and they don’t believe me about this.

It’s NOT “so good” repeated or the “bah bah bah” thing. I’m sure it’s something along the lines of “shut up you’re having a laugh” but only specific areas use it?

I remember knowing this not that long ago but menopause brain means I can’t remember the exact wording and many Google searches haven’t helped. Friends (and DH) think I’ve completely made this up. 🙈

Living next door to Alice - Smokie

it was Roy Chubbie Brown that introduced the ‘who the f*ck is Alice’ line

Ha ha, I had no idea about the Roy Chubbie Brown connection. The phrase had definitely moved into the wider pub-going population of Scotland in the 90s!

I could hear it in my head, just couldn't remember the actual song. Now I will have it as an earworm.

I'm from the Midlands and a family of Villa fans. They all sing 'F* the Blues' 😂

"Buckfast wine" if you're scottish and "i don't believe it, you're making it up" in my circles

Edited

I'm in Scotland and I've never heard anyone sing either of those!

BitOposh · 17/09/2026 06:44

'I'm doing fine...'#
'To take you from behind....' 😆#

"Woah, baby, let the free birds fly!" Grin

Which always infuriates me irrationally. I would like to give a small electric shock to the ‘Whoah, baby’ -ers. And the ‘Who the fuck is Alice?’ people.

Giraffegirly · 17/09/2026 06:52

In the west of Scotland, rangers fans like to sing it and they add a bit that’s not too complementary about the Pope. I won’t say the words but it’s pretty vile,

You really don’t want to know the alternative lyrics to Tina Turner’s Simply the Best.

Clue, I’m from NI.

Widoeeyes · 17/09/2026 09:19

I don’t believe you. You’re making it up

And?

I'm scottish and I've never tasted haggis or wore a kilt. We're all different.

Many scottish people on this post have quoted the same lyrics as me. Maybe you have lead a sheltered life or didn't go to the 'good' parties?

"Who the f*ck is Alice?"
Okay, I know it isn't the answer to the OPs question, but what song is it?

Every single time someone mentions the name Alice, it triggeres something in my brain and I instantly think "Alice, Alice, who the fuck is Alice" 😭

I've also heard the disgusting rangers fans lyrics to the sweet Caroline song.

And the one's that go along with Tina turner's simply the best.

Theres a few on the celtic side too. All stemming from bigotry and knuckle draggers.

BitOposh · 17/09/2026 10:48

'Hey, hey baby!'
'YOU TWAT'

'I wanna know oh oh if you'll be my girl!'
Is another one.

Im a celtic fan,so i know them well, unfortunately.... although given celtics league dominance we hijacked the song for a bit

Seagulldancing · 17/09/2026 11:04

They sing all these at Oktoberfest. Nothing like 1000s of middle aged people in a tent, waving 1l pots of beer around singing "who the fuck is Alice"! They also sing the "do do do" to Sweet Caroline.

GrandTheftWalrus · 17/09/2026 11:41

Im a rangers fan and know both the sweet caroline and simply the best parts. However i dont sing them as i am neither a bigot nor a knuckle dragger.

I'm just making a comment for goodness sake.

Nothing to do with going to parties or having lead a sheltered life.

Just my experience.
