Has anyone here learned to play the piano as an adult, from scratch? Teaching yourself or with a tutor.

When my children were young I took DS1 to piano lessons. It was a disaster because he hated it and it was a constant battle. I let him give up eventually and decided that enforcement in something they hated wasn't what I wanted for my children. So DS2 never got lessons.
One of my big parenting failures, because of course he was the one who loved music as an older child. When he was 25 he started lessons and has loved it. It's quite expensive but he has made great progress. He's only doing it for himself so hasn't taken any grades formally but informally his teacher does assess his progress.

I imagine it's good for the fingers and the brain.

Apparently after Ed Balls lost his seat he decided to learn to play the piano and got to grade 8! I mean obviously he had a lot of time on his hands!

I was never musical so when I was pregnant with DS 1 I'd play all that baby Mozart to him in the womb, and used it to play him classical music at bedtime. He also was less than enthusiastic about the piano and stopped after struggling on to about grade 2 . I once took him to a Classical music concert his uncle was playing in when he was about 4 or 5 and he immediately fell asleep though, so that bit worked!
