Would it be reasonable to ask for a partial refund in this circumstance?

Hi everyone. I attended a concert on Saturday night at the AO Arena in Manchester. When we first arrived we went and spent an extortionate £40 on 2 drinks and 2 burgers! 🥴 Then we went to find our seats. Upon sitting down I realised mine was broken and essentially unusable. As the support act came on I put up with it but I was so uncomfortable I couldn’t any more so found someone to complain to about it and ask what could be done. They came to try and fix it, this whole process meant we missed 80% of the support act.

Obviously they couldn’t fix it and upon trying they actually snapped the whole chair in half. They told me to go to the reception desk to speak about getting replacement seats (I was with a friend). We waited around 20 mins and missed the beginning of the main act before they told us where they were moving us to. Found our new seats and they were in two blocks further back and 6 rows further back, in fact we were put at the furthest point away from the stage. Tried to argue this with them and all they could give is food and drink vouchers which again were pointless after we’d spent £40 an hour earlier.

We put up with it as we didn’t want to miss anymore of the show and complained via email the next day as there is no doubt in my mind the new seats were cheaper than our original ones. They have now replied saying they will honour the free food and drinks the next time we come to the arena! The only issue is, I don’t plan on going back, it was already 2 hours travelling and I have 0 events booked with them in the coming months, not to mention this having put me off.

Am I being totally unreasonable asking for a partial refund that covers the difference in price for the two seats?! Not to mention the amount of the concert we wasted sorting something out that was due to no fault of our own. I’ve emailed back saying it’s not good enough. But just wanting some other peoples opinions?

I think that they’ve definitely ripped you off. You’ve missed a lot of the show and haven’t been given the service as was advertised - ie a seat to the event in the block you chose.
I would make that very clear in an email to them and say that the offer of food and drink does not cover the specific service which was advertised. I would then probably try the credit card reclaim, but you have to have tried with the vendor in the first instance, I believe.

I would want a full refund that is rubbish

Did you pay on credit card I think you can do a chargeback or s75 claim

Yes, this. The fact that you might have caught a few songs in the background is neither here not there and very scant compensation; they completely failed to provide the experience that you'd paid for and it would be seriously clutching at straws for them to imagine that anything other than a full refund is obviously in order.

In fact, a full refund should be the bare minimum. It's not like you bought, say, a TV and were initially given a faulty one that they swiftly replaced with a good one; the concert was (presumably) a one-off (at least for that venue) that you were excited about, made plans and set aside an evening for, and have now missed for good. You probably also had travel costs, maybe babysitting costs and even potentially accommodation if you don't live anywhere near; and you clearly paid far more for the food and drink in expectation of the concert and the captive audience nature of the venue than you would ever have paid for the same/equivalent from a standard shop to consume at home.

If there was an easy way of finding out, I'd be interested to know if they actually repair/replace the broken seat, or remove it from sale for future events; or if they don't do a single thing and just rely on future customers unwittingly booking it and being less tenacious/confident and/or more easily fobbed off and just put up with it.

Hi everyone, thanks for the replies.

I’ve had an email back today AGAIN saying all they can offer is the free food and drink upon me returning to the arena in the future and that the case is closed.

I’ve asked for it to be escalated and reviewed as I truly think this is ridiculous and so unfair.

Further email back saying it’s been reviewed multiple times and they’re still coming back saying all they can offer is the food vouchers. I’m actually in a little shock? I’m considering calling them next but am I just wasting my breath? What else can I actually do?

Assuming you paid by card, raise a chargeback.

I’ve never had to do this before but yes paid on card, what usually happens?

Did you book the ticket with an external ticketing platform or directly with the venue? Either way the sale is basically with the promoter rather than the venue, so all they can offer is a good will gesture eg vouchers.
I’m no expert though so do look into options suggested by other people.

Yup - totally agree - full refund!

Glittertwins · 17/09/2026 16:53

Definitely a full refund as you did not get what you paid for. Go via the credit card company now. I successfully got refunds of tickets when the headline act pulled out and the venue wouldn’t refund as the event was still going on.
Thats not what was advertised and sold though, I would never have travelled 2 hours to see that particular band and my credit card company refunded me.
