Looking for some advice. Over A Level summer my DD has really ramped up the job search and has found it extremely difficult. She initially applied to high-street retailers but only got two interviews and both were unsuccessful.

She’s also tried agencies, but most vacancies are full-time and don’t fit around university. Shes tried the uni student union and their jobs page, but many of those are suitable for second and third year students rather than first year or are a one off role. We’ve asked family and friends as well, but many are in the same position and struggling to find work.

Recently, she had a trial shift at a kumon place where she was pleased as they were acting as if she already had the job, and were teaching her tge method they use. She however then messaged for confirmation if she does have the job, and has been ghosted.
Shes feeling really down about this as she does need the money.

Companies are recruiting for Christmas now so I’d look to see if there is anything there. Boots definitely are advertising for Christmas staff. I’d also advertise cat sitting services among your friends and neighbours. I pay teenagers to feed my cat twice a day while we’re away.

It's possibly a long shot, depending on where you live, OP, but are there any dairy farms near you? Our local teens tend to start working there in their mid-teens, and some keep doing it up until they graduate/get a full-time job, as the morning shift (very early hours) and sometimes late evening shifts work well around school/college/university hours.

It's wet and dirty work, and I admit that it's not for everyone, but it doesn't take long to learn, it offers regular pay, and you do get faster and better at spotting things later on.

So hard, the job market for young people is so difficult now

Warehouse jobs, DS, 3rd year Uni, has 2 on the go, both zero hours but has been working at either one for 6 days a week, one as a packer for fast delivery supermarket and another packing meals for schools and residential homes. He found it really hard for first 2 years of Uni and came home in the holidays to his seasonal job. He did however stay in his Uni city this summer which helped him get these, he will be dropping one to concentrate on his final year.

Are there any hospitality agencies in the area? DD signed up and did this and it paid well and she worked around uni. The other jobs she had were for a language school (there were a number of students working there doing admin) and for bakeries/cafes.
There’s nothing like taking your CV round to businesses - many will be looking for Christmas staff soon. Good luck.

Two of mine worked at McDonalds while at college. They always seem to be advertising around here and will employ from 16.
Another one is working at a 999 call centre whilst at uni. They are very flexible with hours but I appreciate that wouldn’t be for everyone even if there was a centre nearby.

Is she any good at swimming? If so its worth doing the Lifeguard training (yes you do have to pay for it but its an investment). My ds is year 12 and works on a zero hour type contract as a Lifeguard at a local gym.
