Why is it so hard to get a tradesman?

Just that really.

I've got 2 basic jobs that need doing and all I get is time wasters and people ghosting me. I don't know where I'm going wrong, but I'm on the verge of having a go myself. I'm no carpenter, how hard can it be? 🙄

I have to ask also, what small job would cost £75?!

You wouldn't get much more than a lock change for that where I live!

.

Edited

I was just using £75 as an example.

This. ^ Plus @beaglescurleduplikebagels my 2 jobs were £550 and £450. Not little teeny jobs. The young man who came to us had £1000 off us that day... (£450 was materials, so he actually earned around £550 - for 6.5 hours work.) £84.50 an hour. If the 'bigger fish' are too important and busy to do the jobs for us, as the jobs are 'too small,' I shall continue to give young starters in my village the trade. Clearly the big fish don't think £84.50 an hour is enough for their precious 'big man' time. 🙄

The thing is, once you've been in business a long time, you don't just have to take every job that comes along - you can afford to be picky and to turn down stuff you're not interested in or that you just don't want to do.

It could also be the case that they simply don't have a day free to come and do a job for you - DH has gone through periods where he's booked solidly for months and genuinely doesn't have a spare day that isn't eaten up by other things.

Ask for recommendations on your local Facebook page. It's the best way to find reputable traders looking for work.

It's really, really not. It's where I started with both jobs and it's just endless women shilling their boyfriend's/husband's/brother's business who then either don't reply or fob me off.

And yes, I tried asking for recommendations from people who had actually been customers and it doesn't make any difference.

There's an old boy who might be coming over on Thursday "to measure" and if he doesn't, I think I will actually do it myself and hope that no one throws anything too heavy as the glass.

I'm sorry to hear this. I hate to sound smug but I've had very good luck using FB this way.
Starting to wish teen DS wanted to become a plumber or chippy..

I think it’s a bit like online dating where they sort of line you up and then don’t bother because they had a better offer. The only luck we’ve had in the last couple of years is with people we know/friends of friends.

Thats a god analogy and the internet overall probably is a big factor. Before Google reviews and Facebook searches you had to take on small jobs to keep building a client base and gaining exposure though word of mouth locally. No need to bother with that now onecsn easily reach a huge pool of potential clients over a much wider geographical area.

Does he want to come and fit a glass panel in an old serving hatch for me? 😭 I'm in South London and feeling desperate, this job has been on my list for 3 years and I'm not physically capable of doing it!

Could you try a local window fitting company or glazier.

Yes I've been trying to get a glazier, they're the ones messing me around. Window companies don't want to know.
