Do I need to worry about these things? MIL bday

Organising a special birthday for MIL with the help of DH and his siblings.

We’re taking her out for the day to the theatre, for lunch and then have booked an area in a pub for family to join (she has no partner). All of us have young DC and money is tight but she’s amazing and so we want to treat her.

Shes not my mum and so I don’t want to resume my usual position as a CF but is a Costco cake nice enough? And do we need to serve food at the pub. DH and siblings have said no to food due to cost and keep it simple with a Costco cake but I’m so worried it’s naff. I am most likely massively overthinking but wanted to get some opinions!

does the pub area have a minimum spend or deposit?

As long as invite said no food I’d be fine.. I like Costco cakes! Times are tough

What time is the area in the pub booked?

FelixRyark · 15/09/2026 20:50

Dory OP, for clarity, “Booked and area for family to join”…join what exactly? Is the assumption from others it is only cake and a cuppa or are people/family coming and they all know they are fending for themselves?

How will anyone know it’s Costco cake?

Ritaskitchen · 15/09/2026 21:08

Home made cake would be cheaper than Costco? Depending on how may of you. Could split the cost and make cupcakes?
Drink and cupcake's would be nice.

I think it’s fine! Sounds a lovely day for your MIL. Just be clear on the invite as PPs say. If it’s over a meal time, people can get their own and cover MIL’s.

i love costco cake!

As always it's the thought and time expended that counts, not the money.
No one receiving a birthday cake is going to be critiquing it's perceived value while you sing happy birthday. They will just be happy you made an effort!
