I'd probably give her some calpol when she wakes and see how she goes, you could wfh in case she does need to come home from school? Could just be a mild cold or it could be a nasty bug, you might just have to wait and see.

concertinacornflake · 15/09/2026 06:16

I'd give a day off school for a temperature. A temperature means the body is engaged in fighting a virus.

That said you know what normal is for your kid. If they are normally 37.4 then 37.5 is not really high. If they are normally 37.0 that's a half degree high.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 15/09/2026 06:21

You've likely already done something, but how is she otherwise? Any rash? Appetite? Thirst? Does throat i side look red, swollen or spotty? Lethargic?

You could give paracetemol with ibuprofen initially , but paracetemol every four hours after and ibuprofen every 6 hours.
If she worsens in any way over the day call your GP.

37.5 can be normal for my children, so I'd do nothing. Or give them some calpol for good measure if they're feeling rubbish.
I don't really react until 38

Brendayouknowthatyouremuchtoolazy · 15/09/2026 06:25

That would have been pretty usual for DD. I stopped using a thermometer on her, she ran hot normally. What's normal for your DC?

DandelionSeeds · 15/09/2026 06:38

How old is she?
And what happens once you go to work? Presumably there is another adult, or she's old enough to get herself to school?

I dont go on temperature. I go on the child. So, personally id wake her, and make the judgement from there.

CurlewKate · 15/09/2026 06:42

I must have been very neglectful-I wouldn’t have known. I would have waited til they woke up so I could see if they had any symptoms!

WorriedMother96 · 15/09/2026 06:53

Is she normally quite a hot sleeper? Both my kids seem to get hot and a bit sweaty while they're asleep so I wouldn't be able to judge by that reading alone, as previous commenter said I'd have to wait till they were awake and see how they were.

ItsOnlyMee1 · 15/09/2026 06:57

If you can work from home then do that. I would always want to stay home where I can.

Theunamedcat · 15/09/2026 08:07

My boys would be find my daughter would be vomiting so mine would be child dependent

Basically you know your child best

TrojanDonkey · 15/09/2026 08:24

37.5 is barely a temperature. I wouldn’t give calpol for that unless they feel rotten. Sounds like she has a cold.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 15/09/2026 23:46

How did the day work out @EntropicalFruit

EntropicalFruit · 17/09/2026 07:20

Thanks for asking @Mumtobabyhavoc she had a headache and felt a bit dizzy when she got up, I gave her something and sent her in. She slept a bit after school and wanted to go to her music lesson when she woke up. Yesterday morning back to a normal waking temp of 36.7. Still a bit sniffly but otherwise fine. And she gave it to me!

She probably gave it to half her class as well. When you have the option to wfh why would you send a sick child to school ?

Mumtobabyhavoc · 17/09/2026 18:24

Hoping things are on the up for all of you @EntropicalFruit 🩷

Papyrophile · 17/09/2026 20:23

For me and my child, whose normal temperatures run a bit low, 37.5C would have me thinking elevated. But I wouldn't take action until it went above 38.5, and at that point I would point out that it was well above normal. I hope it goes well.

Sidge · 17/09/2026 20:29

37.5 is hardly a fever in a child, especially one who’s been snuggled in bed all night. We (HCPs) consider a fever 38 degrees or above generally, but also take into account other observations such as respiratory rate, responsiveness, skin appearance etc.

Treat the symptoms and not the numbers generally.

thisgirlwantsmore · 17/09/2026 22:34

37.5 is perfectly normal!! Medic here

errrr because she has a cold. Most adults wouldn’t have the choice not to work if they have a cold - it’s two paracetamol and off you go. This is the same. Staying at home is for D&V, flu, chest infections and chicken pox.

ElefantAndCastle · 17/09/2026 22:57

38.0 is fever. 37.5 isn't.
I would have taken it rectal as well to be sure.

Because school don’t allow that as a reason to be off?

The schools policy would tell her to. We don't love the germ sharing but we don't blame the parents when schools literally tell them to send them in.

TheStepboardisfullofbitteroddos · 17/09/2026 23:20

37.5 I wouldn't even blink.

If child seems well or just a bit snotty then business as usual. Calpol if child feels crap. Pretty much always ignored temperatures and go by the child once they're over 6months old. Take the temp if they're feeling unwell but only medicate if actually out of sorts.

Tickingcrocodile · 17/09/2026 23:30

It depends on the child. When my DC have been really quite poorly - flushed cheeks, glazed eyes, feeling too unwell to get up, sometimes their temperatures have sometimes only read 37.5. They seem to feel very under the weather with even a slight raise in temperature. My basal temp has always been slightly on the lower side so they must take after me. Other children would probably still be running around with that sort of temperature. I would go by their behaviour rather than just temperature reading.
