What age did you come downstairs while your child was in the bath?

I mean not just come out the bathroom but actually come downstairs where you can’t hear them?

I do it now, (aged 10) but come up regularly and ask for the door to be ajar. I probably started doing this about a year ago. I still worry they’ll stand up and slip etc..

I’d closely supervise an under 5 and loosely supervise an under 8. At 8 they can usually go swimming at the leisure centre without a supervising adult so unless there are medical or additional needs going on then at that age they should be able to manage a bath on their own and that’s when I started leaving mine to it, unless they actually wanted a chat. Older than 10 then I’d fully encourage door closed and privacy as to me it just seems appropriate at that age. How old is your child and what’s your worry OP? A compromise (age dependent obviously) could be showers if you want to speed up bedtime/get things done but still worry about them in the bath on their own?

She is 8 and does like to have the door shut but at the moment we have a downstairs bathroom so I would hear if she was to call out.

We are moving and the bathroom will be upstairs so I won’t be able to hear her if she calls out.

I think that’s fine. As PP says just teach her to do the plug before she gets out and maybe consider a non slip mat.

DS is 7 and I don’t need to be there the whole time but I think it’s too young to be on a different floor for more than a minute or so (eg I suddenly realised the towels are downstairs in the tumble dryer). For now, we’re happy with that but I expect him to want a bit more independence in a couple of years.

From about 5 I'd potter around in adjacent room while chatting and popping in/out and help with hair. By 9 he preferred a shower but I'd still hover upstairs for fear he slipped. Age 10 and I go down and potter in the kitchen which is directly at the bottom of the stairs so I can hear everything. I often end up siting on the stair as DC likes to chat. Am occasionally called in to help with a shampoo bottle cap or such but otherwise he gets on with it.

DD1 is 9 and I'm comfortable being downstairs now when she is in the bath upstairs but I do insist on the door being ajar so I can shout up to her every so often to check she's ok. If she wanted the door completely shut I'd probably hover upstairs.
