Is ongoing bleeding normal 19 days after copper coil insertion?

I had the copper coil inserted 19 days ago. I spotted / lightly bled for a couple of days post insertion, with some cramps. That went up until around 8 days ago when I started getting sharp twinges. I have been bleeding ever since with on/off cramps. It’s heavy for a bit, then becomes much lighter until it virtually stops for a few hours. Then it starts again in the same pattern. My period is due tomorrow, so I don’t know what’s period or not now. I am also feeling extremely hormonal and emotional despite it being the copper coil.

Is this normal? The constant bleeding is getting me down a bit. I know I was to expect heavier and more painful periods which I am fine with tolerating, but I didn’t expect constant bleeding. It’s getting me down and making me irritable. It also means having sex is a bit more tricky as I don’t know if it’s going to be a blood bath afterwards!!

When I had the copper coil, the exact same thing happened to be and I'll be honest it didn't stop. I ended up having it removed, unfortunately. Not every body takes to it well. They do say it takes months to settle so maybe wait but if it's still getting you down after a few month's I'd have a chat with a professional.

Fingers crossed it improves for you!

Thank you. I am really surprised this is happening, as didn’t expect this side effect!

Anyone? I feel like I’m such an emotional mess right now 😭

I had one put in as emergency contraception. No hormonal mess that I recall, but I did bleed most of the following 4 months. Thankfully I got it removed in Feb 2020 or I could have suffered much longer!

How are you today OP? bleeding can be normal for a while after copper coil insertion, I had one where it just didn't settle and I had it removed. Bleeding can also be a sign of other things like infection, best to get it checked out maybe? Bleeding might well settle down for you over time.
