Instagram is really that bad

I have had deactivated my account for a year and because some people told me I need it to "make new freinds" it's now active again but I don't have it on my phone and I only occasionally check it on the browser.
I've been working at my current job for over two years now, it's a decent job and I appreciate a lot of what it brings me. Also I'm single and does not feel bad about it.
However, the second I went on to Instagram to check on my friends stories, almost every single time, I got bombard with the information of who's traveling or working abroad, who's having a better job, who's got a girlfriend etc you know what I mean.
I suddenly feel so worthless and doubting myself for idk maybe not working hard enough. I start comparing my perfectly fine life to those of others.
Whatever good Instagram provides is not worth it to what it take away. I'm going to deactivate it again now.

I stopped going on instagram because it was showing me all my deepest fears. I have really bad health anxiety and all the content is showed me was people with terminal illnesses or who had been in accidents or had sports injuries. WHY? I found it so hard for my mental health.

it entirely depends on who you follow. I follow lovely Victorian house renovations, holidays in the alps, stuff about Paris (as I love it) - I don’t follow my friends on there but use it as a place for inspiration. Sounds like you need to follow some different accounts (or just log off) and learn to work on your self esteem - a grown adult should be able to look at instagram and realise that isn’t ’real life’ and is just a curated feed to get likes / monetise their account - nothing more

I’ve jot had instagram for years. i don’t
understand how you’d make new friends on Instagram, friends you meet in person, SM is all online.

If Instagram makes you feel anxious then yeah cut it out your life.

Instagram is personally my preferred social media platform. I like how you can filter your feed to show just those accounts you follow and not all the spam content.

ProfessorofDarkArts · 14/09/2026 06:40

@Heyhelga how do you do that?! I see very little of the posters I follow just endless ads and ‘you might like’ type stuff.

When you open up Instagram just click on the words Instagram at the top centre of the screen. It then gives you the option to change the feed to following. You have to do it every time you open up Instagram though.

I don’t follow anyone I know in real life. Never have. All I get is bookstagram, yoga, decluttering, feminist politics…it’s very peaceful tbh!

I get a lot of perfect mothers pretending to be imperfect and thus relatable.

I tried Instagram but had to uninstall it because it's so bad for my self esteem.
In fact social media in general does that to me.
A wee while ago there was thread on MN about MN's Facebook.prescence and I made the mistake of looking at MN on Facebook. I found the vibes of MN on facebook so totally alien to me and my perception of what MN is about on it's website that I deleted my account for a while and I'm careful now to try and forget about MN's Facebook persona.

I don't like that they are trying to force you to sync all the meta junk together and that everything can be scraped and used by others. Not sure if it trains AI on users accounts with no opt out as twitter does but it is totally unnecessary unless you are an 'influencer' grifter.

Insta is literally crap. Makes facebook look classy.

I was telling my teens about how good original facebook was. Everything was in chronological order. Good times.

LarryForPrimeMinister · 14/09/2026 09:05

Instagram is rubbish, its basically a shopping channel trying to sell you things every 2-3 videos or stories. Its extremely anti social.
