I have to be in London for 9am tomorrow (Liverpool St Station) and back there for 5pm, I have the whole day alone.
Last week I walked to The British Museum which was fab.
Have done Natural History Museum, could walk to St Paul’s but is there something else amazing and free I could do instead? Thank you!

I always love a wander round the National Gallery (by Trafalgar Square). The general exhibition is free.

V&a surely, it would take me days if I had the time.

TootUnCarMoon · 13/09/2026 19:35

Ok thank you! I did the Portrait Gallery last year I think it was for the Six Wives Exhibition but haven’t been to National Gallery.

The Tate modern and south bank. You can walk over the bridge in front of the Tate and go see St Paul’s after

Go up one of the free tall buildings - Horizon 22, 13(something) Fenchurch Street etc
The Wellcome collection opposite Euston then Treasure of the British Library about 10 minite walk away.

The Bank of England museum is free, near that area and quite interesting. The Bloomberg Mithraem, by Bank station, is really cool but you have to book. I haven't been into the church by Bank but it's famous and sometimes has free concerts. I also like Hays Galleria on the other side of the river for a coffee and people watch.

This. I have walked from StPauls to Covent Garden when on my own in London along the river. Loved it.

St Katharine Docks is walking distance from Liverpool Street, go and gawp at the yachts of the super rich 💰 lots of nice places to eat there too.

Have you been to the jewellery gallery at the V and A? It’s jewellery from pre Roman times to now, literally pieces from every century, every era. It’s completely incredible, they have so many tiaras and massive diamonds (it’s better than the Crown Jewels honestly)

It’s beautifully displayed too and you just start at the beginning and go all the way through the centuries, perfectly lit, the stones just glitter hugely. The upstairs gallery, glass staircase has chateleines and cigarette/tiny boxes - they are INCREDIBLE. Solid gold, jewels, enamel work, just stuff you can’t buy now.

@LaurieFairyCake No I haven’t but I think I’ll do that next week. Sounds great!
I walked to St Paul’s but I thought it was free and it’s not so I went to Tate Modern instead and then walked back over London Bridge to Liverpool St.
Thank you for all your suggestions!

Coal drops yard is lovely

JacknDiane · 14/09/2026 21:26

Oops sorry, you've been, glad you had a good day.

St Paul’s is free if you go to a service. The last 5 o clock one I went to was brilliant. Woman minister, all curates women. Was a lovely service, just an hour, visiting choir. And you can walk round afterwards.

Went to the V&A Friday but mostly closed due to staff strikes but had already booked tickets for the Schiaparelli event. Really wanted to see the jewellery!!
