DH in Hospital

Hand hold really.

DH is in hospital following a heart attack. I took him in on Thursday night after 999 said an ambulance could be up to 90 minutes.
I'm super worried but need to just get on ( we have 2 primaty aged DC ).
I had a bit of a spiral of worry... we are in the middle of some renovations, I dont understand how the electric car works, I dont know what/how much to tell the kids, he doesnt want visitors just yet but is video calling so weve seen him, what about our holiday... I've worried about some pretty dumb stuff and important stuff.

I'm going to ask to WFH for a few days so I can do school runs (he dows the majority) and be around for trades people. I don't want to go off sick as I'd let the people I support down. Work are usually flexible.

I think he may have over done it over the summer. He was made redundant before the kids broke up. He works around school drop off so we knew a new job could be tricky. Hes thrown himself into renovations and looking after the kids. Maybe he was stressed and didnt say, hes such a laid back man. Not like me!

Lucky to have family support, DM jumped out of bed and was round when I called her to stay over when I took him on. Friends have offered help.

Write down all your worries - then they are not going to spiral round in your head as much. You can tell yourself that you don’t need to think about that right now as it has been noted.

The grid method might help split the paper in to 4

  • important and urgent - do these
  • important but not urgent -schedule these for later
  • urgent but not important - ask other people to do these
  • not urgent, not important - do they even need to be done?
Then practice self care - make sure you eat and sleep and don’t try to be everything for everyone.

(Slightly puzzled by the electric car though - just get in, push button and drive - much easier than petrol)

My DH has had heart surgery and he is improving all the time now. I send hugs to you. DH is lovely to people and his surgeon was a lovely man as well. While he was in hospital the surgeon would call in after his last operation .He obviously worked weekends as he even popped by on weekend evenings and laughed when I said I hadn't realised he worked all week. He said While there are operations to do they are done all week. Be prepared heart patients quickly run out of energy for a long time and that hadn't been mentioned. DH sometimes need a nap of an hour or so. Best wishes to you ,your family and of course to your DH.

Oh that’s a lot on your plate right now. I think writing things down like the pp said is a really good idea.

Hope your DH is on the mend soon Flowers

Electric cars are easy - when you know how. I had to get DH to show me as well @Elmo230885 . It is really simple once you’ve seen it. Is there a YouTube for your car?

My DH is also in hospital although it was a planned operation but I’ve had similar thoughts - things jump into your head and then you think that’s a silly thing to worry about but it doesn’t stop you. I understand Flowers

That is a great plan to write everything down and then solutions to how it will work. It’s fine to take some time off work if you need it, especially if it means you can be in hospital for ward rounds to figure out what is happening. A couple of days to help you get everything sorted may mean you’re more effective at home and work and in a better place to deal with things in the long term.

We've only had the car a couple of weeks. Theres loads of screens and there's a weird charging setting on it so I can only charge at certain times. I'd only driven it once! It was blocking in my car and I took it to the hospital with us.
Anyway its just a stupid thing to be worried about. It doesn't matter.

Thanks for the other advice. Gonna get out with the DC today ( lunch out, as we have ran out of plates as we have no kitchen sink and the dishwasher isnt plumbed in yet ). I think i'll bag up plates and take them to a friend's house.

With the EV, it’s probably set to only charge at night for cheaper power. Just plug it in and it’s likely it’ll charge overnight without any further input.

Wishing you all the best of luck x

that’s a lot on your plate OP, sending strength. You’re going to have to hold it all together for your kids and DH now so no wonder you worry about the small and big stuff. Really good you guys caught the heart attack and he’s still here for next steps.

MrsPapillon · 13/09/2026 08:57

You’re in the thick of it. Just take it all one step at a time and make sure you take care of yourself while DH recovers. I hope he’s on the mend very soon.

Just a tip - when we were having our kitchen redone and had no sink, I’d put the dishes in a big plastic storage box, carry it upstairs and put it in the bath, fill it with hot water and wash the dishes over the bath. It was a pain in the arse but it did the job!

endofthelinefinally · 13/09/2026 08:58

WRT your holiday, you need to let your travel insurers know. Gather all your booking and payment information so you can make a claim. You will need to provide hospital paperwork. It should be straightforward and can wait till the more immediate things are sorted.
I hope he is doing ok.

Lentilcakes · 13/09/2026 08:58

Our friend had a heart attack a few months ago (he was one waiting to happen tbh!). It was a shock though but after initial treatment he is now fine, albeit on meds and lifestyle changes. It was a massive wake up call
Practically can anyone help you with various tasks, def take time off work, etc. Do the urgent stuff first.
Best wishes to your dh for his recovery

Littledidsheknow · 13/09/2026 09:07

I’m sorry you’re going through this.

As far as the EV is concerned, just keep it plugged in when at home and it’ll automatically charge at the appropriate times. You don’t need to wait till then to plug it in.

All the best to you and I hope your DH is recovering well.
