Would you buy a backup cake after making one yourself?

Made my daughter’s birthday cake for the first time and, honestly, I feel like it hasn’t quite gone to plan.

I’m seriously considering picking up a backup cake from Sainsbury’s on the way to the party tomorrow, but DH and DD both think I’m being ridiculous.

I just don’t want to embarrass my DD when all her friends’ mums seem to make these amazing, perfect-looking cakes! Am I overthinking this, or would you have a backup cake too?

It’s absolutely fine, even your DD thinks so if she’s told you not to get another one. I’ve been to loads of parties over the years and I’ve never remembered the cake, I think you’re overthinking.

BeMintFatball · 12/09/2026 21:07

The only person who matters is your daughter. All she will focus on is Mum
made the effort for her.

present the cake at the party and be proud. Core memory in the making. You got this 👍🏻

I think your DD will prefer the one you made.

Homemade is best, nobody raves about a supermarket cake. Give me a shout if there’s any left!😺

You made her a cake! That's brilliant. My mum never made me a cake, she got other people to make them until I learned to make my own. But now I think back, it's a bit sad that she never made me a cake.

Next year, if you want to go fancy, make the same cake, but two layers and decorate with chocolate bars. Looks impressive, kids love the chocolate, but is really easy to decorate.

Looks great. Buy some chocolate fingers to stick round the edge to polish it off. Yours will definitely be tastier than shop bought

Hobbin · 12/09/2026 21:22

That looks delicious! Absolutely do not buy a different cake.

I'm trying to see what you think it wrong with it. The only thing I can think is the number 9 candle maybe doesn't look quite as festive as 9 little candles would. But that is literally looking for things to criticise. It's a tasty looking birthday cake with a 9 on it, it's all good. Hope she has a lovely party!

turnthefanonpls · 12/09/2026 21:27

The cake looks yummy! It might not be as aesthetically pleasing as a shop bought cake, but it definitely looks more tasty and fresher! Don’t get a backup.

persisted · 12/09/2026 21:32

Shop bought cakes are style over substance. Don’t buy another, thats a rubbish lesson for your DD. Something made with love and care isn’t less good because it doesn’t look perfect. It is perfect because of that.

longtompot · 12/09/2026 21:51

I think most people would prefer a cake that looks like yours (which is not bad looking at all btw!) than a bland shop bought one

BCBird · 12/09/2026 22:05

Your daughter is happy- that's the main thing.

MyNameIsTina · 12/09/2026 22:08

Do NOT buy a back up cake! Yours is lovely.

You could trim the edges if you wanted it to look a bit more polished - but you absolutely don't need to!

I would always trim the edges but only so I could eat them standing up in the kitchen (the danger with this is the cake gets more and more trimmed until it's teeny tiny).
It looks great OP.

Hell no. You should see some of the creations I’ve made for DD over the years. Always had her birthday tea at home. The one occasion we went to a play place I bought a Barbie cake and it was grim.

Homemade all the way.

Empress13 · 12/09/2026 23:46

It’s how it tastes that’s important I’m sure it will be fine and nice for her to know mum went to the effort of making it.

seriousandloyal · 13/09/2026 18:37

It looks lovely and I’m sure your daughter will appreciate that you made it for her.

HelpfulHelena · 13/09/2026 18:41

@Saga21 thats what I was going to say! Chocolate fingers round the cake and it will look AMAZING.

I tried to do dusky pink icing on DD’s last cake and it came out grey! Awful!

BendingSpoons · 13/09/2026 18:49

It looks tasty and your DD was happy. Hope she enjoyed her party.

BrummieMummy1989 · 13/09/2026 21:55

Thank you so much for your lovely feedback and advice. Sadly, the cake was the least of my worries. The whole party was a complete write-off. I ended up with one very upset birthday girl crying in the toilets, while her mum was desperately trying to hold back her own tears as she consoled her.

Just nasty, horrible so-called friends.

At 9? Good god, what's happening to the world?

I'm so sorry, I hope you can console her x

Frazzledinmyforties · 13/09/2026 23:00

Oh no @BrummieMummy1989! Hope you’ve both gone home and had lots of cuddles and feel better.

BrummieMummy1989 · 13/09/2026 23:39

also had a mum who completely forgot to turn up until I called her because the kids were getting bored of waiting. Even then, she didn’t exactly rush to get there!
