Sudden enormous heavy hands feeling. I couldn't move my hands. WTF

I posted months ago about what I called fat finger feeling (Alice in Wonderland Syndrome) that I get sometimes and lots of you knew what I was on about straight away.
So tonight I had it again whilst sat on the sofa chatting with my husband, only this time my entire hands felt like they grew bigger and heavy. To the point where I felt I was unable to move them. They felt as big as breeze blocks. I had to ask my husband to pick my hands up and as soon as he did, it went away.
Anyone else experienced it quite like this?
It was a tad unnerving.

Have you seen your GP?

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 12/09/2026 19:49

Angioedema. Go to gp

Horrace · 12/09/2026 19:52

It happened half hour

That is actual swelling, the op is describing is just the perception of heavy hands not swollen. So it a problem in the brain (which is NOT the same as made up) rather than a problem in the hands.

OP Have you been diagnosed with Alice in Wonderland Sydrome?

No i haven't. I only learnt of this name from mumsnet when I posted about my fat finger feeling I get from time to time then loads of posters said they get the same thing.
Tonight started like that but turned into something else.
But as soon as my husband moved my hands for me. It went. So odd

I had it all through childhood. Ive never had it as an adult. Its properly weird.

ThatJadeLion · 12/09/2026 20:03

I had this once in a very stressful time of my life but it felt like my teeth were huge. Touching each one with my tongue they felt oversized.. like 10-20 times the size. Occasionally it comes back when under enormous pressure.

Doggymummar · 12/09/2026 20:04

I had it once in Amsterdam after some really strong weed

Seziah · 12/09/2026 20:06

Have you drunk enough today? I get strange feelings like this when I’m dehydrated, and sometimes almost feel stuck in place. It’s definitely unnerving… not dehydration related but occasionally when laying in bed I have the feeling that I’m floating up near the ceiling. Bodies and brains are weird

But has anyone had it quite like i described tonight's episode where a limb or limbs are so heavy that you are unable to move them?

I get the standard feeling with fingers and teeth quite regularly and I do think hydration is related to it.

interesting

I missed it. What did they say?

I've never had this with my hands but I get it with my tongue. My tongue feels massive in my mouth 🙈 generally when I'm under stress or very tired

Didimum · 14/09/2026 21:42

I get this with my hands from time to time right before falling asleep. They feel disproportionately huge. I’ve never really thought about them feeling heavy or not, as I’m going to sleep, so not trying to lift them anyway.

I think seeing as ‘hypnotists’ manage to convince some impressionable people that limbs etc are too heavy to move, then it might be reasonable that there is a psychological element to it.

You can have medication for it (the drugs usually used for epilepsy) but can just live with it
Usually starts in childhood

Munchyseeds2 · 20/09/2026 18:24

People phoned in who have it

Letterleaf · 20/09/2026 18:27

Alice In Wonderland syndrome doesn’t usually affect adults. You need to see your gp. Something else could be going on with your brain
