Prospective lodger angry because I had not yet removed the advert

I've been advertising a room to rent out and I found someone a few days ago. I then kept the ad on the site as they've not signed the contract yet. No point taking it down in case it fell through at contract stage which it sometimes does.

This morning at about 8.45am (far too early on a Saturday in my opinion) a guy rang asking to have the room. I politely explained it had already gone and wished him good luck in finding something.

Over the next 10 minutes he then proceeded to send me text messages and messages on the website having a go at me telling me he's going to report me to the website etc as I should have taken down the ad etc etc. About 10 messages overall. Obviously, I've blocked him on both and reported it to the website.

Why do people act like this? I get that its irritating to ring and find a room has already gone but that's life surely. I dread to think who ends up with him as a housemate.

And don't even get me started on the fact that he completely disregarded everything I said in my ad about my preferred housemate (he is definitely not it and yet he wants me to dance to his tune).

Sorry I just needed to rant but why on earth do people do this stuff? I'm someone who just lives a peaceful life, I don't deal with people who think everything is about them. It's weirdly shaken me up a bit despite it being a bit of a non event.

Sounds like you’ve had a lucky escape!

I had similar with a builder who was so angry that I had already given the work to someone else that he tried to catch me out and rang me from several different numbers enquiring after the same work.

The fragility of the male ego never ceases to amaze me. Don’t let this ruffle you in any whatsoever. He is a lunatic.

Yeah I got so much hassle, rude remarks, bad behaviour and unreliability from males that I now just advertise for females only.

Fuck, men are hard work.

Yep! Like the OP, I clearly had a lucky escape.

I mean, either you take the ad down or you expect to hear from people. The guy sounds awful but he wasn't in the wrong for calling or for getting frustrated to be told it was gone (when the ad was only kept up because you weren't sure if it would fall through, and you could have said that).

He sounds vile so you dodged a bullet.

I’ve had this. He even offered a ‘one time only’ 25% discount if I booked him right then, despite previously telling us how busy he was. I never respond well to high pressure sales tactics like that so told him not to call
me again and blocked his number.

So around 10 messages via text and the website are ok rather thsn just accepting the disappointment like an adult? I'll take the ad down when the contract is signed. I've no problem people ringing (I'd rather it wasn't that early in the morn on a weekend) but sending harassing messages is something else.
