Screen time - how to manage it

Hi, i removed screen time earlier this year for my child and they no longer have a tv switched on in the house when they are awake. No other screens anyway.

recently though, I have been wondering about things like how to handle the cinema and special Christmas films or otherwise. If you’ve removed screens, what is your stance on this? Child is currently young so not a teenager and wanting to go out with friends.

thanks

Personally I worry about parents giving young children ipads and phones to use rather than a bit of TV so wouldn't worry about watching films at all.

How old is your child?

Mine (7&4) don’t have any handheld screens of their own, my eldest uses an iPad for some school maths stuff that they have as homework.
But most Sunday afternoons we do a family film that we sit and watch altogether and it’s certainly not something I worry about in terms of screen time.

Thank you, this is exactly what I’m after - I’d love to watch a film with them at some point but just wasn’t sure if no screens meant no screens ever!

I agree with this. DC are 8 and 6 - we are more relaxed about TV and movies but they don't go on phones at all and have very limited time on a tablet. Being able to sit through a whole film actually requires a decent attention span so we don't discourage that.Even better if we watch with them.

Thanks this is really helpful.

Even now at 11 my dc doesn't use an iPad/tablet/phone to watch something, just not anything that we do or like really.

TV though is not something I have strict rules about per se and a film together is different to watching Peppa pig on repeat as it's a family thing you can chat about.

That’s interesting- it was Peppa Pig on repeat and everything else that became the problem. I don’t mind a social watch as a family, just not the zombie fication by PP et al!!
