If your lifestyle looks anything like this please share with me what yearly household income you have!

please share mumsnetters, this is where I want to end up for my 40s and there are people around us living this kind of lifestyle but I can’t ask them how much they earn IRL!

dream lifestyle is:

3 holidays a year - one long haul two smaller European city breaks type
1 nice car bought outright - nothing majorly expensive around the 60k mark
coffee out for both adults x5 a week
lunch out for both adults x2 a week
dinner out every Friday - whole family two adults two kids
good Christmas every year
money for regular hair appointments for whole family
enough money for both kids to do sports and music out of school
nicely decorated house
monthly shopping treats for all family members maybe £50 each
Food shop from M&S
clothing to be mainly high street with the odd designer item thrown in for whole family.

no mortgage, no childcare fees, both children in state school.

That would be me if I had no mortgage. 55-60K/ year.

BeKookyExpert · 12/09/2026 12:54

You need to factor in savings and pensions. We have enough for this kind of lifestyle, but we save £3k a month so we don’t actually live like this

Asuitablecat · 12/09/2026 12:56

You'll need a lot more than we earn then! I'm a teacher with responsibility. Dh earns less.

House: 10 more years mortgage.
2 cars because we work opposite directions. 2nd hand. Both less than £10000 and about 10 years old now.
1 family holiday- but if you don't teach, you can two for the price we have to pay in holidays.
I x away with friends
Rarely eat out.
Shop lidl and asda.
Kids do activities.

We're happy. We have enough.

No offence op, but are you my teen dd?

So DH and I currently earn about 110k together, and without a mortgage (off the top of my head) we would have about £3.5k a month disposable to cover those extras, which feels like it should be more than enough?

ShitHoleDweller · 12/09/2026 13:04

RomeoRivers · 12/09/2026 12:29

Not if you are mortgage free.

I guess being mortgage free would free up another £800 pound for us a month which would be £9,600 a year. That would certainly be a few holidays worth. Most people have mortgages or rent though.

HeNeedsRehab · 12/09/2026 13:04

Our monthly take home is c£10-£11k a month and we can do all that plus pay a mortgage, childcare and save considerably.

My car is financed though and DH owns his van outright.

I’d say without the savings, mortgage, childcare etc we’d do it on half that.

60 k between us, no kids, spend 3 to 4 months a year at home, travelling in some form the other 9 months.

Similar here, although we’re both self employed and income can fluctuate between 60-100k depending on how much and what kind of work we’re doing. Last year it was around the 100k mark and we did 2 months travelling around South America as well as a ski holiday and a European city break. This year we’ve done skiing and a city break again and are planning another long haul trip of 4-6 weeks over summer 2027. We also eat out 3-4 times a month, buy coffees probably twice a week. But we have no kids and a tiny flat by choice to keep the mortgage low (we’re in London and the mortgage is £400). We also manage to save £500-£1000 a month each. Edited to add we don’t own any cars either.

@Morepositivemumme neither! Just came across this thread while googling coupons to get a free coffee today 😂

i don’t know anyone that earns this sort of money!

We live in an area with lots of nice little coffee shops! Find it a great way to see friends, do a bit of work or relax a little! We both love it and don’t want to give it up.

both adults in the house do this Monday to Friday when the kids are in school

I buy coffee 4 times a week as I’m surrounded by lovely indie coffee shops so completely relate. Takeaway coffee is a trigger on MN. Anyone who has more than one a month and doesn’t go to Costa is ‘frittering their money away’🤣

I have lifestyle similar to one you describe but pay a £1500 mortgage in London. Our HH income is about £180k. We have around £3k spare a month. So I would say you could probably achieve what you want outside London on about £100k? Depends how expensive your holidays are. We probably spend about £18k annually on two holidays abroad and a couple of short UK breaks (includes filghts, food, accommodation, excursions). Next year we plan to visit Japan so will only have two holidays as JP alone will probably set us back £15k. I bought my car outright for £23k. I have never quite understood the financial logic of PCP or other car finance schemes.

How is a 60K car ‘nothing majorily expensive’?

I’ve got so much heat for this!

an expensive car in my humble opinion is like a Ferrari or Lamborghini?!? Like 300k

happy to be told I’m wrong…. Clearly struggling in the car dept

A very high one! Ours is 150k (7.5k take home a month) and we’re nowhere near that. We live in the South East and spend £1400 on mortgage and £500 on nursery each month.
We own our cars outright but one was £25k, the other about £12k. Shop at Tesco. Coffee out once a week. Dinner out as a family once a month. One European holiday for a week, mid range but in school holidays. Maybe a cheap Uk city break in addition (we used a youth hostel this year). Take lunch to work. Good Christmas and our house is ok but it has been 10 years since we last decorated some rooms and I couldn’t really afford significant work to it without getting a loan. Decent clothes from the high street (some from Vinted)

I think it is possible to have all of the things you mentioned but not all at the same time unless you’re earning significantly more - maybe £300k household income?

emptythebin · 12/09/2026 13:15

Yes 60k is 😱 to me, our car was 20k 2nd hand & income is around 110k.

Big shop is at Lidl & budget on average 6k for holidays so no long haul. DCs monthly activities are about £300 per month.

No coffees as don’t like it & dinner out is more like once a month with lunch twice a month. Hair is 3-4 per year and lots of clothes from Vinted.

Leopardspota · 12/09/2026 13:18

Similar to us, but we have a mortgage and childcare that is about 5k per month. So I’d say you’d need 5-6k per month, which when split between 2 isn’t big salaries. No mortgage is a massive saving.

She doesn't have a mortgage nor nursery fees though - so for your 7.5k lifestyle she'd effectively only need 5.5k.

thiswillbedisplayed · 12/09/2026 13:19

We earn maybe 300k-400k a year, house owned outright, and do that sort of thing, with maybe a couple more breaks as well. Don’t bother with a £60k car though when 20k gets a nice 4-5 year old VW Golf.

Wow. To spend so much money on shite and not on education, when you can afford it?

Drealifegoals · 12/09/2026 11:53

Thanks! Very useful!

the car is actually bottom of my list! Currently driving 2008 polo….DH wants a bigger fancier car 🙄

Last year I begrudgingly traded in my small 2015 Peugeot 108 and purchased a £30k second hand SUV as was due a baby. I must say it’s luxurious, I’d never want to go back to a small simple car. If you can afford it, join the dark side and treat yourself 😂

Tbf school fees for 2 is 60k net per year so they may not be able to afford it by saving on coffees etc.

DH main earner - absolutely loves the job, thrives in high stress. Even has to ‘do’ things on holiday!

Poor thing! Hope he is able to find non-work joy and the ability to chill out soon!
