Drealifegoals · 12/09/2026 11:12

If your lifestyle looks anything like this please share with me what yearly household income you have!

please share mumsnetters, this is where I want to end up for my 40s and there are people around us living this kind of lifestyle but I can’t ask them how much they earn IRL!

dream lifestyle is:

3 holidays a year - one long haul two smaller European city breaks type
1 nice car bought outright - nothing majorly expensive around the 60k mark
coffee out for both adults x5 a week
lunch out for both adults x2 a week
dinner out every Friday - whole family two adults two kids
good Christmas every year
money for regular hair appointments for whole family
enough money for both kids to do sports and music out of school
nicely decorated house
monthly shopping treats for all family members maybe £50 each
Food shop from M&S
clothing to be mainly high street with the odd designer item thrown in for whole family.

no mortgage, no childcare fees, both children in state school.

Same, mine is a mid range Volvo any means that had 11k miles on the clock and 5yrs service included. It was £42k. Brand new you'd have to get the smallest most basic model to even get down to £37k!

IffWhite · 12/09/2026 16:15

Its really hard to answer, but why not just get the best job you can and then spend what you can, save what you can?

Aim high with earnings- dont settle for 'enough', but it never will be.

HarlanCobenDogshit · 12/09/2026 16:15

We're £90 ish, with no mortgage and dont have as much disposable income as required for all the holidays, meals out etc.

This! I have no qualms about spending my money and having fun with it. But I have a miser friend, who puts herself on an extreme budget and bores us to tears over it. I’d estimate she has about £4million to spend.

We had just over £100k coming in 20 years ago in the South east and we couldn’t afford that lifestyle.

To be fair we don’t have mortgage/rental payments and no nursery fees. If we did, I can imagine it would be north of 120k outside of the SE and god knows what in it, I actually dread to think!

Cheaper end of the spectrum is £40k for a new Volvo - I am not making anything up! https://www.volvocars.com/uk/shop/ex30-electric/

XC40 Core B3 hybrid is available at £33k.

Oh I do love a thread where everyone pitches up to tell you how rich they are. 😂😂

I know, a great excuse for a humble brag 😂

"Just be more attractive, bro."

We haven’t saved for our children - we’ll hand it over when needed. No special savings in their names, no way would we be doing that!

No we didn’t save in our children’s names, but we did save for them. I would definitely prioritise putting your children through university over having coffees out 5 times a week.

shuggles · 12/09/2026 16:19

@SchrodingersGuinepig If someone is determined to buy genuinely brand new, they're hardly likely to want to compromise on three doors instead of five in a family car, nor on all the gismos, and probably want a larger car for comfort for school aged children. They'll often also want a hybrid - bumps the price way up again.

Why on earth do you need five doors in a car instead of three? Understandable if there are people in your family who are not able-bodied... but in families with two able-bodied adults and able-bodied children, why on earth would three doors be an issue?

The overwhelming attitude towards tech in car and "gizmos" is that they are just more things that can break, and more things that can go wrong with the car.

As for comfort, have you ever sat in a tiny city car? Extremely comfortable and very easy to drive. So if you want comfort, buy an A-segment city car.

Yes she has told me when she’s been very drunk 😁 I’ve known her for a long time.

Satisfiedwithanapple · 12/09/2026 16:20

120k OP. I don’t have a 60k car though, I save 500 a month instead.

We earn maybe 300k-400k a year, house owned outright, and do that sort of thing, with maybe a couple more breaks as well. Don’t bother with a £60k car though when 20k gets a nice 4-5 year old VW Golf.

How on earth do you earn that much though?

"nothing majorly expensive around the 60k mark"

My brain has got stuck at this part. I simultaneously know that there are lots of cars more expensive than this and that our cars are at the lower end, and still think that if you want them owned outright that that's still not 'not majorly expensive'.

I know.

I switched off at 'nothing majorly expensive'

Astrabees · 12/09/2026 16:23

Whatever figure you come up wit OP you will need to factor in sufficient pension to enable the nice life to carry on in retirement. It maybe that you are public sector or have a good employer based pension but if not that will be something you should look at. We are retired and can afford all the things you mention that still apply now the children are grown up ((though we would not spend that much on a car even if we had the spare cash). We have a pretty good pension between us but I think you would need around £75k gross pa plus whatever the car cost to carry on living this lifestyle.

DB works for a MC law firm, the partners earn 1.5m plus

rivalsbinge · 12/09/2026 16:26

I was going to say both people on about 80-100k each after tax, you could afford that. Why you’d want too is another question!

Me and DH can pull that kind of money but I would never ever buy half that stuff 😂 I even bulked at the price of the yeti coffee cup we both have.

but good luck OP how long to do you have to reach those goals? Oh we still have a 11 year interest only mortgage by choice we have investments running alongside, capital growth in our case is best kept outside of the property.

emptythebin · 12/09/2026 16:27

@shugglesbaby car seats make 5 doors much easier.

i bet it is. I wasn’t one of the kids who preferred smoking to learning. I’m just not out to tell all and sundry about it..very declassé.
