Can you feel your food being digested, externally?

OK, weird I know.

But I've always been a hefty girl and have lost a LOT of weight.

Am now 9st and last night I felt a movement to the right of my belly button, not a painful one but like a spasm.

I pressed my stomach and i could feel like a lump under there that sort of 'pushed back' and then went away.

Was it like poop passing by or something?! I've always had a lot of padding so wouldnt have been able to feel that?

I don't think its an issue directly related to weightloss though?

You yourself said you possibly couldn't feel it before you lost the weight? There are threads where people are maintaining weight loss and also on effects of weight loss that could possibly relate? They'd be in the same postition as you so could tell you if they've noticed the same or not after their weight loss?

Girlwithavibe · 11/09/2026 12:30

I think that it could be a poop I am super slim and I can sometimes feel a lump that moves and I presuming it's poop in my intestine because it's not always there lol and I have had recent MRI and nothing on there (not for lump )
Entirely different reason but I'm pretty sure if it was a growth of some sort it would have shown up and it didn't x

But its just something I'm asking of slimmer people. Not people that have specifically lost weight.
You don't need to have lost weight to answer the question, just be slim?

Ok, I'll leave it here as I was just trying to help. I think you'll find people that have lost weight to be slimmer people?!

Nooo
Still have periods every month and DH has snip.
Got a positive menopause urine test so I don't think so.

I understand what you’re asking and no, I have never felt anything like that. Unless it was during pregnancy that is!

NotmyrealNC · 11/09/2026 12:41

I've always been slim and yes, I can see/feel my food moving around my digestive system from the outside.

RosesAndHellebores · 11/09/2026 12:42

Nope, never. But my step has and not particularly slim. It was a hernia.

AudHvamm · 11/09/2026 12:44

Yes @AllGrownUpMolly I've had this! I'm slim, always have been, and never noticed this until post-pregnancy. I thought might be something to do with everything settling back into place but several years later it is still something I experience time to time.

I don't have any digestive issues, good diet plenty of fibre etc tbh I haven't ever considered it anything for concern, just weird!

Oh dear.

The area is completely soft now, can't feel a thing there

Its definitely not the right place for baby movement.

Yes, I can. I can literally feel my ascending colon, from my caecum upwards. I can feel it all the time but I can feel it more, I guess, when it's busy.

MeridaBrave · 11/09/2026 13:06

No, never felt this. Could it be a hernia? Don’t worry unless it happens again several times in the same location.

Persephonia1966 · 11/09/2026 13:29

I don't know if it's food being digested or what. But ever since my son was born I am way more aware of what I can only describe as "baby kicks". They aren't a baby kicking because my son is now taller than me. But I think it's normal to become hyper aware of your stomachs doing while pregnant (and while the baby is kicking) and then that awareness never goes away leading to "phantom kicks".

I know that for you it isn't about "kicking" but something your stomach is doing. But it sounds basically the same thing. Possibly losing weight has made it easier to feel those things or losing weight has made you more aware of small movements you didn't think about before. But for me I can say that what you describe is normal.
