Flies around indoor potted herbs on the windowsill, how can I stop them?

i am growing loads of herbs in pots and as we approach autumn/winter i thought i’d bring some in, on the windowsill. It looked so pretty until i literally saw dozens and dozens of flies hanging around.

tried sticky tapes and it was catching a lot of them but where on earth do they come from and how to stop them!!!??

Amazon sells little stick on bottles which trap them with sticky liquid. Gamechanger.

Sorry OP I can’t offer a solution because I have the same problem. They are tiny little flies - almost like fleas and I’ve tried everything. Just when I think they’ve gone I move one of the pots and they all come flying out. I have a suspicion it’s the compost.

Weirdly sprinkling Cinnamon on the soil keeps them away. I read this somewhere!

Start again with fresh herbs but only water them from the bottom! I know it's harder, and sometimes I think 'Oh, I can get away with a slosh on the top for once...'. Nah. Bottom watering all day long.

A layer of aquarium gravel on top of the compost does it. Tried and tested.
