Bought my home alone after divorce, looking for reassurance and tips

Just bought my house after over thirty years with ex.

Would love some stories about how well it worked out for you. And any tips that made it easier.

I’ll be on a tight budget after having a pretty financially healthy life so that’ll be an adjustment. I’m fine about it but it’ll be something I’ll have to get used to. At least until I get my pension in three years time.

I did this although still currently have 2 out of 3 DC with me.

Firstly well done it’s a responsibility but a brilliant one that you can feel proud of. I have to remind myself of that if I’m berating myself about something minor.

Definitely set up a savings account to pay in to for when things go wrong e.g boiler, electrics, plumbing issue.

Curry’s also do a lot of their items on interest free for 6 months if say your washing breaks down and you don’t have an instant £500 to hand!

Is it a new house or one that you bought him out of?

Thanks. I do feel proud. I was very nervous when I started this process. It took me years to ask for a divorce for example as I thought he’d make it really difficult. But it’s been much easier than I feared, largely I think because I’ve not asked for what I’m legally entitled to (my choice for complex reasons that I’m happy with).

Thanks for the tips too. I will take those on board.

I’m moving out and he’s staying in the family home with young adult DC. Again my choice so I can start afresh. Is it hard for you juggling the kids as well as all the house stuff?

Yes it can be although they are secondary age which helps.

I don’t have a routine as my weeks vary so much with work which can be hard as well but just try and make sure there’s food in the house, dishes are done, loos and sinks are presentable and there’s some clean clothes.

Everything else just gets done on an ad hoc basis.

Id prioritise decorating your bedroom to how you like then if you have moved somewhere new, honestly it became my haven following my divorce. I changed everything round and redecorated and it so improved my mindset.

Great idea to make my bedroom feel special. I love spending time reading and pottering in my room so will definitely do that.

Sounds like you have a really good system that works for you. Honestly it’s sometimes easier to do it yourself without someone else interfering!
