Back to school and off sick already with a cold, sore throat and generally feeling crap.
Anything you can recommend to stop picking up every bug going? Mostly coughs and colds I feel like dd 11 literally gets them every month.

Lots of people swear by Sambucol (black elderberry). DC seemed to get fewer illnesses last year after taking it all winter but it could have been coincidence!

Good diet, plenty of time outside, exercise, good sleep.

Fresh air
proper clothing
good sleep hygine
exercise
proper food

If you think about supplements, check them carefully. Most mulit-ones aren't worth the money, a glass of orange juice is often enough to get your daily portion of Vitamin C plus fresh fruit and vegetables, Vitamin D is good, especially now in autumn, winter.

I would add that if you live in an area with poor air quality (e.g. near a busy road or in an area with lots of woodburners) it's a good idea to put a HEPA air purifier in her bedroom, ensuring it's powerful enough for the size of the room. Cleaner air means less inflammation in the lungs so less likely to come down with every bug going.

For my DC, junior pharmaron really helped and now they are older, Holland and Barret Vit B Energy. I also think good nutrition and sleep are vital - soups etc all good for the winter

Cotopaxi · 10/09/2026 10:45

I was going to suggest orange juice too, and make sure she eats her vegetables.

LoveThemToVits · 10/09/2026 11:39

Vitamin D (with magnesium alongside). Check put the Nutrient Teams Protocol for how much to take.

Yeah, but juice is absolutely full of sugar and sugar is like fertiliser for the bacteria in your throat (where a lot of colds start). Fresh oranges are better - I get why people think juice is healthy/good for you, but it really isn't.

We don't drink it on its own, we add a glass of juice to a meal to help with the iron from food being absorbed, an issue DD has with heavy periods.

And a glass of juice in an otherwise balanced diet is hardly a crime sugar wise.

When you have a cold it's already quite late, it's about setting up your body to minimise/avoid the colds.
