How much homework are your KS3 children getting set? (Y7/8/9)

DS is in Y8 (fairly typical state comp).

He didn't have much homework set in Y7 and in Y8 this seems to have been scaled back further and now I'm a bit worried that they're not being given enough!

Y7 homework was online maths and online reading, plus one worksheet a night rotating through different subjects - this generally took him about 15mins an night plus a bit extra once a week to do the maths and reading.

In Y8 they have dropped the worksheets and now only have online maths and reading.

On the one hand it's nice not to have to nag him about homework on a daily basis but...this really doesn't seem like very much?

If you've got a child in KS3, how much homework are they expected to do?

Or can any teachers shed light on this? My memory of school was having quite extensive homework throughout secondary, have things changed?

In Y8, I think around an hour or so a night. Sometimes took a bit longer.

Year 8: about 30 min per day, plus holiday homework (usually worth about 20 min per day)
Year 9: about the same, but only just started
School has results over national average

wow, I don't think what they've been set is going to take more than an hour a week.

20mins each day of the summer holidays?!

@LongsocksLou approximately, counting workdays! so 5 days a week, about 1.5 hours per week. they are free to do it whenever though
They have very little homework during the term, so its fine.
We are rural, so most kids take about 1 hour to get to school and back, so time during term weeks is limited.

Mine has just started Y7 this week. So far she’s got 1 hour of English homework (as in the teacher has said it should take no more than an hour - looking at it, quite likely to take longer as it involves making a 3D model of ‘my life in books’ and then writing about 5 of them), what looks like about 15 mins worth of Spanish and what looks like about 30 mins of maths. More than I was expecting for week one! My week one homework was always ‘cover your books with sticky backed plastic’. This is a grammar school (but I was also at a grammar school).

My daughter only had maths homework in years 7 and 8 and half way through year 9 she also got science. It was online through sparx

Just started year 10 and ask far no
homework.

Sounds similar to ours - do you feel she’s been learning enough despite the low levels off homework? I don’t want them just doing homework for the sake of it but surely they are getting something through it?

Dd is in Y9. She gets reading, maths and science homework weekly, each about an hour, so 3 hours a week. Occasionally, there will be something random thrown in like making something at home for food tech or making a presentation for drama about lighting design or something. It’s been the same since start of Y7. It’s a massive PITA frankly and I’m not sure it helps much, though she is generally quite bright.

Oh and I forgot, she also has French practise to do, but I cba with another round of homework on a Sunday evening so we don’t usually do that.

Ours is mainly Maths (practice), science (usually some research on the topic), english (reading or doing a presentation), sometimes art, music, geography or history (research)

Year 8, probably about 4 hours a week but it's not all regular - ie they've got a big bit of art homework that will probably take about 4 hours, but then won't have any more for ages. Sparx science and maths on their own are probably 90 minutes per week. Might be less some weeks.

Girls comp, London.

Mine gets English maths in sparx and science on Seneca supposed to take 2 hours each but probably only takes an hour or so. Supposed to do 2 hours independent on the other 2 days but doesn’t do this. This is an average state school. He find the maths and science easy (he is top set)but struggles massively with the English as is dyslexic and school are not very supportive with this.
