So many people have talked about the couples in The Good Life but here's my personal theory:
There was extreme sexual tension bubbling just under the surface, seen only in situations when the characters swopped partners. Only socially speaking, of course.
The episode in which Jerry drove Barbara to the vet's to save the life of the ailing piglet springs to mind.
The Volvo estate battling through the Surrey downpour, windscreen wipers a-go-go. Jerry's brylcreem'd locks falling alluringly over his furrowed brow. The manful handling of the local constabulary with their pedantic ways. The sacrifice of the upholstery.
Use of Ruskin's pathetic fallacy to great effect there, what with it being a' rainin' an' a' darkenin' an' all.
I think it came very close to the old, "Lean the arm round the back of the headrest in a layby" move between Jerry and Barbara then. The little pig would have had to cover his eyes with his tiny trotters.
Compare and contrast with the time when Tom and Margo go to Dorking to buy an antique spinning wheel. Equally highly charged. The flaring of Margo's nostrils like a highly strung thoroughbred mare roughly caught at the halter by the stable hand when attacked over her pre industrial textile production home décor choice.
Tom's stupid impulse buy of the loom, just to wind her up.
Oh, it's all there. I can't explain further.
