How often do you think someone in your real life comes across your posts on MN without knowing it is you?

I always wonder how many people in real life are actually on MN and if I come into contact with anyone I actually know but do not realise.

I should think, quite often. There's someone I work with who I am 99% is on here as, shortly after I met them, they told me a very specific AIBU-type anecdote which I remembered having seen on a thread here in the past.

It’s happened to me before, that myself and my friends have both read and responded to each others’ posts on other threads without realising at the time that we knew each other. Gave us a good laugh when we found out later.

I deliberately change inconsequential details at times - age of dc, sex, locations etc. don’t know if it would throw people off the scent or not!

I change my user name all the time and sometimes aspects of what I'm posting to disguise myself. I did once spot a friend on here; her post was such a specific description of something that was happening in her real life, I knew it was her instantly. I didn't tell her I had seen it.
The risk of my post reaching a much wider audience than intended by getting picked for the Mumsnet social media pages massively discourages me from posting my own threads.

On the gardening board, quite often.😁

I change name and details often. I would be recognised under one specific name I use for one certain topic but my situation is not a secret so I do not mind.

PearlsTeapot · 09/09/2026 17:05

I'm very identifiable, I don't hide details of my life so I should think I'd be easy to spot if you knew me. I should probably not be so open but I dont write anything I wouldn't want anyone I know in real life to read.

I spotted someone I know and had a nosy. I was also spotted by a friend who told me and it did embarrass me a bit but I flicked through my recent posts and honestly, I'm so boring.

A colleague is definitely using MN - I would recognise the her writing style and some of her somewhat strident (but fair and well considered) views anywhere. I have never and would never tell her and I never deliberately look for her comments.

malefields · 09/09/2026 18:36

I doubt in my case there’s much of a crossover, of everyone I know (reasonably well) I can only think of a couple people I wouldn’t be surprised were in here.

RaraRachael · 09/09/2026 18:40

Never. I don't think anybody I know has even heard of MN.

SwanRivers · 09/09/2026 18:44

I recognised one of my colleagues from a 'How old do I look' thread complete with photo.

Being Mumsnet, obviously the guesses ranged from 25-60.

She was outraged and then bizarrely claimed to be 34 when she's actually 40 😳
