What time do you put your kids to bed and what time do you go to bed yourself?

I’m really struggling to know what an appropriate bedtime is for myself, and my kids! I feel like I have no idea what’s normal anymore. We are always tired and not sleeping enough, and struggling to get anywhere on time in the mornings. So it needs to be earlier, but just unsure what’s too early.

8yos - 8pm

11yo - 9pm (well we try)

Me - 10.30

But I am up at 0530 most days

SUPerSaver721 · 08/09/2026 21:31

Depends what age your children are and what time do you need to be up. I put my children to bed around 8.30/9pm depending on if they are at clubs that night. They are 9 and 12. They need to get up at 7 in the morning. Some nights they are not getting to bed until 9.30/10pm because of clubs.

Aerialanne · 08/09/2026 21:33

Similar ages 8-14 and yes we have some late clubs now that make an earlier bedtime hard! We need a 7am start, ideally half an hour to an hour earlier but 7am would he good enough if we were actually well rested.

9 and 12 year old kids, everyone in bed, little one lights out 9, 12 year old lights out 9.30 and I'm in bed on my phone.

FancyKitten · 08/09/2026 21:40

Between 9 & 10, me & six year old go in together. We chat & read stories, then I might sneak away when he’s asleep or crash there.

HappySummerFun · 08/09/2026 22:00

How much sleep do your kids need? How long do they sleep at weekends/on holiday when you don't wake them up?

My 8yo needs between 9 and 10 hours of sleep. A 9pm bedtime is fine for 7am wake up.

My 4yo needs 11 hours of sleep. So we aim for 8.30pm for a 7.30am wake up (I do reading and homework with the older one before getting the younger one up).

I think my kids have lower sleep needs than the average child of their ages.

SlugJam · 08/09/2026 22:09

12 and 11 year olds are in bed for 9. 7 year old (disabled) settles at 10ish. I go at 11. Up at 6 (and multiple times in the night, but we’ll ignore that)

Peonies12 · 09/09/2026 09:31

Mine is 2, she goes to sleep around 7.45/8pm, and we're usually asleep by 10/10.15pm. She wakes 6-6.30am.

Superscientist · 09/09/2026 10:19

6 year old and 1 year old.

6 year old goes up to bed at 7, we read with her until 7.30-7.45 then she listens to an audiobook until 8, then her guided meditation goes on and she goes to sleep around 9-10.

We try to put the baby to sleep at 6.30-7 some times he sleeps until we go up to bed at 10. Other times he wakes up at 8-8.30.

We go up to bed at 10 and usually my partner is asleep by 10.30 and I stay awake until 11.00 as the baby often has a feed around half 10-11.

School days we get up at 7.30-7.45 and on non school days it's 8.30-9.

MinnieMountain · 09/09/2026 10:32

We have a 12, nearly 13yo. He goes upstairs at 9pm, reads until 9.45. Gets up at 6.30 by choice. Could be later but he likes plenty of time in the mornings.

I go to bed and lights off on similar timings. DH goes to bed and sleep at 10.30pm.

DS categorically refuses to do any clubs apart from the school ones which finish at 4.15om.

mindutopia · 09/09/2026 10:40

Mine are 8 & 13. We all go to bed at the same time, which is roughly 9:30-10pm. Sleep from 10/10:30pm (sometimes more like 11pm for me) to 7am, which feels like plenty of sleep. I have too much stuff to do in the evenings and 13 year old has sports training til 9pm part of the week for multiple separate bedtimes. It’s just so much easier if we all go up at once.

JustAPeach · 09/09/2026 10:58

Somewhere between 9 and 10:30 for all of us depending on tiredness.
Me, DH, 15yo and 14 yo.
15 yo has training before school three times a week so up at 5 on those days. Otherwise up at 7:15.

hothousingforsats · 09/09/2026 11:13

Last year during the summer holidays we slipped into a 9pm-ish bedtime for yr 4-5.

We agreed on a bedtime routine (wash face, clean teeth, PJs) before some TV between 7-8pm bed. Then reading in bed until 8.30 and lights out.

DC1 gets up about 7am and within a week of returning to school we had to pull this all back half an hour as DC1was getting grumpy. This year (yr6) we have just kept it the same. DC2 is younger same bedtime routine but only gets 30 minutes of TV, bedtime story read in 5 mins and lights out.

DrunkenKoala · 09/09/2026 11:47

DS 17 (in sixth form)goes to bed when he’s ready. DD 11 (nearly 12) goes at 9 up at 6.30. Me, I go to bed also at 9 and I’m up at 5. DP goes to bed between 9-10.30 and is up between 5-6.30 (depends if he’s going into the office or working from home).

Weepingwillows12 · 09/09/2026 11:51

The 10 year old gets up at 7:30 and starts going up at 9 but has issues sleeping so it's usually more like 10/10:30 when he's asleep.

13 year old gets up at 7 and heads to bed around 10. We don't enforce a bedtime though.

I get up at 6:30 and go to bed at 10.

Dh gets up around 7 and goes to bed around midnight.

Weekends it's a bit later get up and go to bed.

Frogslane · 09/09/2026 11:52

DCs go to bed at 9.30pm. Lots of after school activities, eldest does one every day.

DH goes to bed at 10pm.

I go to bed at 1-2am. That's been my usual bedtime for decades. I like getting things done when it's quiet and no one else around - admin, booking holidays and venue tickets, finance admin, batch cooking, studying, reading.

We all get up at 6.30-7am and I don't feel tired.

middleagedandinarage · 09/09/2026 12:06

5 year old - sleeping 7.30 - 7.45pm
7 year old - sleeping 8 - 8.15pm
Me and Dh. aim to be in bed for 10pm
I get up at 6am, children wake naturally around 7am

AnonSugar · 09/09/2026 12:20

7yos at 8pm. 11yo at 10pm.

Me between 8pm and 10pm. I need sleep. DH at 11pm.

bananaapplepears · 09/09/2026 12:38

Ds16 goes whenever he wants.
Me and DH around 11pm, up at 5.45am

fridgecigarette · 09/09/2026 13:17

My 5 year old goes to bed at 8:00pm and is up for school at 7:00am.

I go to bed at 10:00pm and wake at 6:00am so I can enjoy an hour of solitude and peace before the school run.

Some weekends I sleep in till 9:00am and let my husband and kid enjoy “daddy-son solo time”, they’re both up at 7:00am whatever day it is.

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/09/2026 13:31

Ideally my 9.5 likes 11-12hrs sleep and holidays /Sunday she can lie in

but school days I often wake 745 (my latest) tho sometimes awake 730

bedtime is 8/830 depending if a club night (home by 8) so she gets 11hrs ish if lucky by the time changed/watched 15m of tv

she could go up in her activity but I’m reluctant as means won’t be home till 9 and I think bedtime of 930 3 times a week on school nights is too much and she will be too tired

bed me varies as I work nights but if home then is around 11 but may read /tv/games in bed

troppibambini6 · 09/09/2026 13:36

16 year old goes when she’s ready
13 and 12 year old 9.30

i usually go up at 10.30ish

Blueseptembersapphire · 09/09/2026 13:38

Theres always a lot of variation on these threads. My five year old goes to bed at 8 and asleep around 9, he seems fine. Three year old is bed at 7 but wakes around 6. (She wakes at 6 regardless of when she goes to bed!)
