I’ve convinced myself I have either pancreatitis or lung cancer

I do have anxiety and ocd, which causes intrusive thoughts, but I am medicated for it and mostly okay. But I can get things in my head and then can’t stop worrying about it and thinking the worst.
I’ve tried to make a doctors appointment today but they wouldn’t see me and told me to call back first thing.

I’ve had daily intermittent stabbing pain in the front of my upper abdomen under the left ribs for several months. It lasts seconds at a time and can be worse after eating or with movement. I also have significant bloating, lots of wind, chronic constipation, occasional nausea and reduced appetite the last few days. I’ve recently developed similar brief pain under the right breast/rib area. I’ve lost 8–10 lb since April, but I’ve been deliberately eating less to lose excess weight. I’ve now found some kind of pea sized lump under my left rib/to the left of my sternum area. Could this be a lymph node I’m feeling ?!

Now try convincing yourself that you feel great.

If you can go one way, you can go the other.

Seagulldancing · 08/09/2026 13:03

If you can type coherent sentences you don't have pancreatitis. It is incredibly painful. Go see a gp about the lump and your anxiety. But its not urgent.

StormGazing · 08/09/2026 13:05

Ok stop fretting, I did this and it turned out to be IBS, I’m still here 15 years later without any symptoms now as I think I was panicking!!
get to the GP and get your mind settled x

Please don't as someone who had to sit and watch someone die in agongy from lung cancer. Don't make it into something as serious as that. Seek help for your health anxiety as its not normal and stay from dr death aka google as it tells everyone they will die.

I’m sorry if this has offended you. I watched my nan die from lung cancer so I do know how awful it is. Everyone of the males on my dad’s side, including my dad, have had cancer, so this is feeding the anxiety too.

I had pancreatitis (caused by gallstones) It doesnt sound like this, but I'm not a doctor. Do you have gallstone issues? Are you an alcoholic? (Another big cause of pancreatitis)
Are your stools pale? Yellowing of the skin/eyes?

user1471433754 · 08/09/2026 13:09

I'm sorry you are not feeling too well, but it won't be pancreatitis, that is excruciatingly painful and comes on very suddenly. See a doctor who can sort this out for you, may even be gall bladder probs starting but always best to get checked x

No I don’t drink any alcohol. I was wondering if it could be gallstones and maybe referred pain on the left side, I think this is probably more likely as my diet hasn’t been the best hence trying to lose weight recently. It’s the lump that’s thrown me though

edit - stills are normal and can’t see any yellowing of my skin or eyes

The pancreas and lungs would produce very different symptoms to eachother surely?
Apparently pancreatitis is ridiculously, unbearably painful, like you can barely stand.
Lung cancer would impact breathing but not make you have the intense pain maybe?
So either way you probably have neither.
Have you tried meditation or emotional freedom technique?

upsidedowninsideandout · 08/09/2026 13:10

I’m saying this kindly but if you’ve been experiencing for a few months why did you wait till today and expect to be seen straight away. Take a few deep breaths, don’t stress yourself until there is something to stress about, it’s doing you no good.

BinNightTonight · 08/09/2026 13:11

Ironically, I didnt have much pain when I had pancreatitis. I did when I was passing the gallstones, but when one got lodged I didnt have much pain at all. The doctors/nurses were astounded that I was declining pain medication (especially given my blood results), but i genuinely wasnt in any pain. I know this is an usual experience. But my god, did the gallstone attacks hurt. I couldn't have typed then. Worst times of my life.

tmi but are you opening your bowels normally? If your restricting your food intake it can cause constipation and cause pain, i had a bad eating disorder for 3 years and was in a lot of pain my stomach was basically eating itself and constipation was a bitch. I dont think its anything serious.

Oh just reread your post its most likely the chronic constipation! Get fibre in your diet and get some laxatives. You may have a bowel blockage.

My husband had his gallbladder out last year after years of attacks, then one got lodged in a bile duct and he was put in hospital. He was given double dose morphine as he’s a big bloke and even that didn’t touch the pain, they sound horrible

Perhaps reducing risk factors such as vaping might be a start while you sort out a gp appointment. Look into relaxation techniques for when your anxiety is raised. You cannot change genetics but some things you can try.

This is true, thank you. I just wish my brain didn’t jump to the worst thing all the time, most people would probably be like oh it’s a cyst, or just some kind of fatty lump, but i think cancer straight away, and now it will eat away at me

Then your severely constipated and thats what's more than likely causing your issues. Need to ask the gp for laxatives. Also pack in the vapes, they are worse than smoking.

It could be a lymph node as well but cannot say anything without a full scan. You should get yourself assessed as soon as possible so the earliest it gets diagnosed, the better management plan could be provided.

This.
I had a ct scan and an ultrasound plus FIT test with symptoms less than this.

luckily all ok apart from some quite large gallstones.

Health anxiety or not, just go and see your gp.
