Felt dizzy on a beginners Pilates reformer class, is that normal?

First time on a beginners course today...didnt know what to expect really.

Got on the machine and did simple stretches...pushed feet on the bar and the machine moves back so you stretch you legs/body. At the beginning this instantly made me feel abit weird/dizzy...bit like motion/car sickness.
Then I was sort of ok...it was very hot in there and quite dark.

Is this normal?

Got another 2 trial sessions so will see how next week goes.

I'm also on a few trial sessions! I didn't experience that but I can see how the heat or the movement might do that. Do you do other forms of exercise? Did you mention it to the instructor?

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 06/09/2026 21:23

Might you have motion sickness.

I’ve been trying to work up the courage to try this - I’ve just changed my mind!

Nope dont do anything else. Didnt mention it as instructor was chatting to another person with someone else waiting and I had to go.

I will see how next week goes and def mention if experience the same

I haven’t had this with Pilates but I felt very dizzy and ill during a qigong class, which is so gentle you’re practically standing still. Comical really.
My Pilates instructor suffers from vertigo so avoids anything that aggravates it. If you mention it to the instructor she may give you some adaptations.

When I started reformer pilates this happened to me. I bought those wristbands for motion sickness and they really helped. I probably wore them for the first few months. Been doing it for ages now and thankfully the dizziness stopped but I do remember how awful it felt, it even continued into the next day in the beginning. Keep trying and good luck!

Oh, I didn't know this

It's on my list of things to try, the reformer specifically but it's quite expensive which just put me off so far.

I suffer with vertigo so really get affected by things like this. Yoga is another one that sets me off.

mondaytosunday · 07/09/2026 16:22

Pilates requires controlled breathing which may trigger dizziness when you first begin, plus using muscles you might not normally on a deeper level than you expect. Inform your teacher though.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 07/09/2026 16:25

Oh shit. Signed up for my first session a few hours before reading this! Ah well. I'll crack on and see how I fare.

Bobbybobbins · 07/09/2026 16:43

Yes I had it. Went back to my usual mat Pilates, decided I prefer yoga have my feet on the ground!

500mileslong · 07/09/2026 16:55

Yes I had to stop going- I was ok for first few sessions but then it started triggering vertigo. Another women in my class had the same issue.

floppybit · 07/09/2026 17:06

Reformer Pilates gave me such bad motion sickness I could hardly drive home. I had to go straight to bed feeling awful and still felt sick the next day!

Huckleberries · 07/09/2026 19:57

I looked this up because I was thinking that the motion is similar to a rowing machine

Apparently, people do get vertigo from the rowing machine as well.
