Ds1 just started Yr7. Hes never needed as much sleep as others but seems to have started increasing sleeping time.

He has to leave the house40 to 60 minutes earlier than Yr6. Gets up at 6.30.

Hes only just 11 if that makes a difference. Im saying in bed by 9, lights out 9.30.

Yr 7 boarders were lights out at 9.15pm at DC’s school.

Is the issue that he's pushing back?

It can be helpful to share reliable resources into sleep and how important it is for his brain, health and education. It can help not to talk about bedtime but rather talk about how much getting plenty of sleep will benefit him and how some people don't get enough sleep so they feel stressed and can't function well.

Also tell him to tell his friends he goes to bed later than he does if the issue is peer pressure!

No phones/tech after 8pm (unless they are still out at extra curricular)

My yr 7 is lights out about 9.30. He gets up at 7am. Seems OK generally.

Bed for 8:15, lights out by 8:45, up at 6:30. I may look at extending this later in the year but currently she's shattered!

Hi OP, new y7 parent here too. Mine is up at 630/45. She has to leave by 730. She only started last Thursday. She went up at 9 and read till 930 but I don’t know if it took her ages to go to sleep. If given free reign, she’d go to bed later and get up later - she’s a night owl, so leaving an hour earlier in the morning will be tough for her. I think we’ll just have to play it by ear. Good luck.

My own boarding school for yr 7 was lights out at 9.15 so I did that for dd, too. She had to be out of the house at 7am.

Seems like we are not too far off then. Although last nighthe was still awake when I went up after 10 with the light on.

Make sure all devices are removed. I found 8.30 pm suited me - dd not so much. We would charge them overnight. In year 8, she was stealing them back so we resorted to a lockbox for a year. By the time she was 15.5 years old, she started to self regulate so we didn’t need to be so strict.
