How can I return jewellery found in a hotel bathroom?

I’m out of ideas as to how to try to return an item to its owner.
I stepped on a piece of jewellery in a London hotel public bathroom. Fortunately it didn’t appear damaged.
I couldn’t hand it in to reception as lost property, so later phoned the hotel to give them a description and my contact details so the owner could contact me.
They wouldn’t take the report and asked me to bring the item to the hotel. I couldn’t do that as was miles away.
I have also tried to hand in to police local to my home but they won’t take it, which I sort of understand as no one is likely to travel all that distance, or even think to check so far afield.
I’ve also spoken to police near the hotel, but they don’t take lost property either.
I have found a fee paying website where lost and found items can be reported, but I have no idea how widely known or useful that would be.
Many years ago I found an expensive personalised bag on a train, no staff around as late at night and despite posts on Facebook and trying to find the owner, contacting train company, etc I finally contacted the shop. I thought they may be able to tie up the personalisation with the customer. They asked me to send to them special delivery, and they would reimburse costs. I did that and never heard another word.
I would happily pay to post the item back to its rightful owner, but not a third party who they just might contact.
Can anyone suggest anything?

I wondered that. Perhaps it was busy at reception and OP was in a hurry but I think I'd rather be a bit late than have to worry about holding on to someone else's jewellery.

Did you think about taking it then guilt caught up? In can’t fathom why you took it out of the hotel and neither left it at reception or in the room?

Post it to the hotel. That is the best (only) chance of the owner getting it back.

Why on earth couldn’t you just put on the reception desk? Post it back to the hotel with a note. There is no way you can track down the owner yourself.

Call reception at the hotel, explain, ask them to let you know if someone asks them about the lost jewelry and you will post it directly to the owner

If the hotel has a social media page/account try posting on there - the person who lost it may check on there to see if anyone’s found it (they may even have posted themselves asking if anyone’s found it).

It would have been so much easier handing it into reception or giving it to a staff member, the owner will probably contact the hotel before going online checking websites or ringing police 🤔

If the Op was in too much of a hurry then leaving it in the bathroom was an even better option than talking it “miles” home with her.

You really should have just handed it into the hotel at the time, rather than basically stealing it so you could be the hero to reunite it with its owner late on. Now you can obviously just post it back to the hotel, because they’ve asked you to give it back to them.

Why would they need to give her someone else’s name and address? She can post it to the hotel.

I’m finding it very hard to believe that you couldn’t have handed it in at reception, unless it was unmanned, which is unusual.

Agreeceith the consensus. Alt maybe see if they have a FB page and post on there saying "I found an item of jewellery, describe it and I'll post it" kind of thing?

Post it back to the hotel with a note to explain. Recorded delivery. Job done.

Send the stolen jewellery back to the hotel with a note saying what room you found it in and when. That's all you can do.

Did you think the hotel would steal it or something? I have no idea why you took it away with you, take a photo post it back to the hotel put the photo onto hotels social media say it was posted back do it anon if you don't want the person think you stole it and changed your mind?

To everyone asking why I didn’t just hand it in, it’s a fair question although unhelpful as I can’t turn the clock back.
It was a vast hotel, I hadn’t passed reception to get to where I was.
It was in a very busy location, our booked taxi had just arrived and the driver was being moved on due to roadworks so we had to leave.
If I’d thought about it at the time I would have just left the item on a table and hoped it would get handed in, but I just didn’t think.
My friend has poor mobility and it was a struggle getting out to the taxi before he had to leave.
I’ve tried the hotel Facebook page.
