Does anyone have a mattress topper for hip pain?

I sleep on my side, and we have a fairly firm mattress. We used to have a soft mattress but it made DH’s back hurt.
However, now I wake in the night with hip pain. Having done some research a memory foam mattress topper for my side of the bed might work. Has anyone tried it? Apparently it needs to be around 3inches deep.

Yes, before I had my hip replacements (do very dodgy hips) I bought a new mattress which I thought would be as soft as butter. Wrong. Hip pain was awful. Memory foam topper sorted it right out.

No, but have you tried a full body pillow like those used in pregnancy?

Thingsthatgo · 05/09/2026 21:00

@Iwouldratherbemuckingoutoh, sounds promising. Did you buy a good one? Any recommendations?
@30DegreesHighAndRisingthanks - yes, I loved my pregnancy pillow! I dug it out of retirement and it has definitely helped a bit.

The panda mattress topper is just what you need. I use mine to reduce hip pain

SquigglePigs · 05/09/2026 21:02

We've just spent £2k on a medium-firm mattress to manage my hip pain. Not convinced a topper on a soft mattress would make enough difference but probabky better than nothing.

Iheartmysmart · 05/09/2026 21:05

Another one with a Panda mattress topper which has helped. I also bought a massage gun a couple of days ago and have been using that on my hip before bed and it’s made a huge difference.

WutheringBites · 05/09/2026 21:06

Yeah I get terrible hip pain on a firm mattress.

in the shorter term, you could try a really thick double duvet folded in half and try sleeping on that. I don’t get on with memory foam - I think it’s because you kinda sink into it, and I move about a bit when I’m asleep.

SoMuch2Say · 05/09/2026 21:07

I tried three expensive ones which helped but not enough to justify the cost. They all went back and I ordered a £30 foam topper in the shape of small cones (if that makes sense) from Amazon. I still get a little numbness but no pain.

NolanChanceJustLikeTheWeatherNSoul · 05/09/2026 21:27

My DW uses one of those between the knee pillows, she's osteoarthritis and a congenital leg condition it helps her.

@SoMuch2Say£30 is definitely worth a try! Would you be able to share a link to a similar one? Or post a pic of what you mean, please? 🙏🏻

Mattress topper definitely helped. Also using arch support insoles has made a massive difference to my hip pain if yours has a similar cause.

WinterBlues26 · 05/09/2026 21:57

I have a mattress topper from Dunelm AND a single duvet under the padded mattress protector. I swear I can still feel that pea though 😂

Iwouldratherbemuckingout · 06/09/2026 07:29

@Thingsthatgoim really sorry it’s a few years ago now and the mattress topper is long gone, so no idea 🙈

BananagramBadger · 06/09/2026 07:35

This advice usefulness will depend on age - but I had hip pain for about 8 years - physio, pilates, mattress changes etc.

Disappeared the week I started HRT for entirely different symptoms.

Shamelessly tapping into you experts…. Does anyone have particular pillow recommendations for side sleeping / hip pain? Insta is giving me lots of things to buy but I don’t know which might actually be good.

I had to cut it because my husband hated it and found it hot but this was in the middle of the heat wave!

No but I have a waterbed. Best thing I ever did for my hips!!!

Arcticsway · 06/09/2026 10:13

Yes, I bought a new mattress which turned out to be too firm and gave me back and hip pain. So I bought a Panda memory foam topper and it has resolved the problem.

thisgirlwantsmore · 06/09/2026 12:33

Another vote for the panda topper, bought a new mattress and being too firm it played havoc with my hips. Panda sorted it overnight. Bought on very with a 20% off first order thing and paid off immediately

BoarBrush · 06/09/2026 12:41

Interesting that so many rate the panda topper, I hated it and it made absolutely no difference apart from making the bed extra bouncy.

Seashorewaves · 06/09/2026 12:47

I use a padded mattress topper. They are widely available from Dunelm, M&S, Amazon etc. and cost around £40. They do go flat after some months and have now found that a cheap single duvet on top helps a lot. Both need replacing eery year or so.
