if you're not into fashion/brands, what do you wear

This kind of doesn't fit in Style & Beauty, because placing it there sort of presumes we all already love fashion and style and I'd rather get a good sample from the regular population!

If you don't care for typical fashion/trend stores such as Me&Em, Baukjen, Whistles, Toast, etc, but you don't much care for supermarket stuff either what do you wear?

I like fashion, theoretically, but just don't care enough to follow trends, even though I don't want to look dated and stand out like a sore thumb either. For years I decided to use mostly outdoor gear, so leisure-wear, leggings, hiking stuff, boots.
However, I have recently moved to a large market town and the weather and environment are somewhat different to what I'm used to, and I am growing really bored with my wardrobe.

If you are anything like me at all, what do you wear and where do you buy it? It's not that I want to opt out of regular clothing, but I tend not to care for it much and it's never all that great for the price or quality.

I don't follow trends and I'm not attached to any one shop - like you I'm interested in clothes, but not in fashion and trend. I like Joe Browns stuff, which I know isn't 'stylish' or 'fashionable' but I don't care - I like colour and pattern and I can't be bothered to change from season to season to keep up with any idea of what's cool. But now I buy most stuff off Vinted (including Joe Brown stuff), or otherwise small relatively inexpensive labels like Edy & Bridge because I'm trying to avoid buying new high street or mass produced stuff.

What i can't seem to get my head around is why everything is so big and oversized. Everyone seems really ok with this and i wonder if i'm actually going mad! I don't long for tight fitting clothes at all but the oversized-ness of everything is really impractical for me :(

i along with most my town wear brands like seasalt, white stuff, mistral etc but mostly because the only clothes shop in town sells them

Ahh thanks, i used to do that, we had lots of outdoor shops close by so it was really easy to just go with the flow and buy those. Now i am living close to a Seasalt! I should probably explore.

whatever I find and like from charity shops. I don’t pay more than a few quid for an item.
Quite like supermarket clothes but only on sale stuff, never full price.

I need smart clothes for work and can easily find stuff in charity shops for that. Not at all interested in labels, if I like it and it’s no more than a fiver then I’ll get it.

Decided that the remainder of the year I’m not going to buy anything and I’m going to make use of what I’ve got. I’ve had a huge clear out so have just a handful of items that I’m going to stick with until 2027, trying to keep expenditure down.

I've been doing that and lots of my clothes are now looking old. I saw a dress in Sainsbury's today but it was as thin as cheap toilet roll paper. I don't like higher end either, just a ton more money for shapes that don't suit me. I'd like to wear dresses but since I walk a lot through winter I have no idea what coat to wear with them in all weathers.

I love fashion, but not trends. I was a teen goth and it wasn’t a phase. Nowadays I favour vintage denim and vintage band tees, a mix of boho, rockabilly and a leather jacket with everything. I have a few places I get my band tees and denim, but I will also get pieces from disturbia, little lies and I’m certainly not above places like ASOS if I see something I like.

Whatever I like the look of/suits me. I only wear dresses and skirts with jumpers or blouses, so I just look on Vinted or in charity shops for the colours and styles I want. I've never followed trends.

I do like Seasalt but only in small measures, some of the patterns are too fussy for me.

I recently lost tons of weight and are currently wearing mainly M&S, surprisingly good basic T-Shirts and cargo-style pants. For work I need a bit more formal wear, I always like some Hobbs tops, the quality is really good and I can dress them up or down with a pair of jeans.

I have an odd shape, very curvy with larger boobs so I need to try on in person and have ordered and returned plenty of items in the past so I often stick with one style in a variety of colours. One reason I am not keen on Vinted.

I may go back into wearing dresses/skirts but as I am still loosing weight, I am conscious about not buying too much in case I drop another dress size.

A lot of stuff from M&S, occasionally Next although a lot of their stuff seems a bit too "blingy" recently. I also have a few things from Seasalt and White Stuff and a pair of jeans from Hush. Also got a coat from Debenhams online last year.

I tend to buy more shirts than t-shirts. I never thought I would see the day, having sworn that I'd never wear one ever again after secondary school, but I like the pastel-coloured ones, or striped ones. They can look casual or smart, depending on what I wear with them. I tend to put a crew-neck jumper or cardigan over the top. I'm trying to get away from inevitable jeans, so I buy skirts and dresses, which get a lot of surprised looks and friendly comments from strangers (and accusations of being 'incognito' from anyone who knows me!). Coats are usually smart trench-style ones.

I like looking at the "smart" end of smart/casual, and the 1950's-type look (and feeling like a lady, as I am the lone female on a farm the rest of the time, and look like I've crawled out of the muck heap sometimes). I have a mixture of M&S, Dunnes, Morrisons, ASDA, Rydale, Hoggs of Fife, Seamstress of Bloomsbury, etc.

I’d probably have a look at Boden and M&S. Does it sound like you’ve already found a Fatface/White Stuff type of clothes and want to move on?

Personally I’d stay away from mountain warehouse legging, wrap dress, vest, sensible shoes as I think it’s a bit ‘given up on life’ but then that’s just me.

I like “& Other Stories” and plain basics from Boden (as opposed to their appliqué or patterns) but can’t get on with shapeless Cos stuff, for example.

Haha, i have the most heatwave-friendly dress from Mountain Warehouse, it's a good one I promise! Not so great when the sun goes in though
I am tired of the leggings, hiker top vibe and can't decide whether to put money on dresses or trousers.

However i have seen these cord joggers I like at Seasalt, can see them with a half tucked slouchy cashmere under my winter coat. No idea if the'yre good as have not shopped there so may try some.

have been scouring Whistles dresses but everything feels very precious and easy to snag on a passing bramble.

And on the subject of Seasalt, does anyone know what sizes the models wear? I presume if they're like Fatface then a 10? Or 8?

I love clothes but hate fashion. I buy clothes that I think suit my body and are practical for my lifestyle.
I try to buy quality fabrics and well crafted clothes.

I get my nice tops from Long Tall Sally, Lands End or Next because they're too short from most other places. I get dresses from LTS or Vinted, jeans and trousers from M&S. I'll wear anything, Primark, supermarket, I'm not fussy. I wouldn't pay a fortune for "designer" clothes.

Agree, I don't think many are worth what they cost after a certain amount either.

I think if you’re feeling a bit ‘lost’ in your style it’s worth looking at celebrities whose style you admire. It’s good for ideas and figuring out what your taste is.

I get that - I'm 5ft 1 and this giant baggy thing just totally swallows me. I like some of it though and I think as I get older and fatter I might just accept the OTT baggy colourful look anyhow as I'll look like a small sack whatever I wear so I might as well embrace it.

It’s embarrassing to admit but I went on Instagram and searched for ‘quiet luxury’ as I am rather partial to simple colours and lines. I admire the Cos and Toast aesthetic but it would look ridiculous on me, like clown outfits!

Anyway I’ve come up with some Zara cutoff jeans, white or pale blue blouses or shirts, &Other Stories beige or navy wool and cotton jumper mix (no polyester in sight!) adidas trainers or a Chelsea boot, then throw in a black handbag and a gold coloured necklace…

I look causal yet put-together and can be dressed up or down without having to think too much.

Not a ditsy jersey dress in sight and not expensive to recreate.

I seem to have an aversion to patterns at the moment, don't quite know why. Have been wearing linen mix trousers with plain tops and thin cardigans. Also looked at the pile of fleeces in my wardrobe and am tempted to charity shop the lot.

i go down to London a fair bit so worked out what size I was and mostly order online now (although I still try and pop in when in London).

my mum lives near a big discount clothes warehouse place (boundary mill) so I go there a couple of times a year - that’s Roman, old lady type brands but good for dresses etc.

got some really good quality cord trousers from Lucy and yak last year - no prints just plain red, plain green and plain blue. 100% cotton t shirts tend to be from Amazon to be honest as most t shirts on the high street are thin and bad quality.
