Extreme Hayever or something else?

For as long as I can remember I have woken up every morning to a streamng nose. Every single morning.
As a kid this was annoying but it has in the last few years gotton much worse. I now blow my nose 10-15 times in the first hour of being awake. If for any reason I wake up in the night my nose starts running and I could be up for an hour blowing my nose before going back to sleep.
I always put it down to hayfever as although it happens in winter it isn't as bad and I do have other allergies. For the last few years I have had the hayfever injection in the summer when it is at its worse but it only lasts about 8-9 weeks and costs £100. Instead I have taken Fexofenadine and it hasn't made much difference.
This is starting to affect me so much. I feel awful most mornings, sleep is disturbed and I am also disturbing my husband.

Sorry I meant to ask if anyone had experienced this before and found something that worked?

Sounds like you’re allergic to something in your bedroom. What’s the set up? Feather pillows, dusty headboard, thick carpets etc, or is it as low allergy as possible?

Summerishere123 · 04/09/2026 08:11

All possible, but I just went on holiday for 2 weeks abroad with none of those things and it was just as bad!

And only really the headboard could be the problem in our room right now and I have had wooden headboards etc over the years and still had this problem.

The only thing that works for me hayfever wise is a steroid nasal spray taken alongside antihistamine pills. I just use beconase but doctors can prescribe a stronger one if necessary.

AnnaMagnani · 04/09/2026 22:36

Have you used Dymista nasal spray? Start in the winter when you know your allergies are less to give it a head start.

I take antihistamine year round and swapped to fexofenadine as it's supposedly 'the best' - not for me it isn't, I thought it was rubbish compared to my usual cetirizine. But even with that in peak pollen times I can have a streaming nose and eyes. Dymista is really great for me on top of a daily cetirizine.

The hayfever injection is no longer available on the NHS due it suppressing your immune system and thinning your bones. Please see your GP before doing it again next year.

Have you had your bedding on a washing line? My hayfever season is June/July and can’t hang out washing then but any other time I’m fine….

Could you be allergic to dust?

Openmouthinsertfood · 04/09/2026 22:58

Dust mites? Have you had your pillows long? Do you launder them and hoover yor matress regulaly?

Summerishere123 · 05/09/2026 12:41

Thanks everyone. I am not convinced it is anything to do with my bedroom as this is ongoing wherever I am. I have just been away for 2 weeks in a hotel room and still the same problem. Unless the dust is staying in my naval cavity for those times when im away which considering how much I blow my nose would be surprising. I will try hoovering the mattress etc to see if it helps I suppose no harm in trying.
I am allergic to dust. Always have been but the problems have only gotton so bad that it disrupts my sleep over the past couple of years. I don't hang my washing outside at all.
