Please help - design ideas needed for downstairs toilet room - Pic included.

Any idea what to do with this room, everything in it just seems wrong. What you can't see is pipework all along the right hand wall by the sink. Just want to make it look nice.

I can't tell from the angle, do you have space to replace the sink with a slim built in cupboard & sink combo?

I would paint all the walls and the dark part behind the toilet in one unified colour - something that will go with the blind and the floor colours.
Sort some closed storage to hide away the cleaning supplies, spare loo rolls, and other clutter.
A much bigger mirror for over the sink.
Maybe some greenery - a tiny plant for the window sill (real or fake).
If you can afford it, new flooring might be a nice bonus.
And personally I think the right hand towel and soap holder (whether you prefer to go for a "luxurious" vibe or a "cheerful" vibe) are tiny things, but I know that intentionally choosing small lovely touches like that make me feel happier every time I see them!

I think having some sort of storage-ideally a small cupboard or shelf for putting all "the things" in would be good as at the moment they are scattered about on various surfaces which looks cluttered.

I also think the wooden decorations on the left are a bit high so if keeping them maybe move them down

It's hard to tell but it seems as if like the room is quite high ceilinged which might account for the decorations being placed high and for the room feeling "wrong". If I'm right about the high ceiling then you want items that draw the eye horizontally not vertically to pull the ceiling down. It could be horizontal stripes on the walls or wall decorations that go across but don't put them half way up the wall. Instead maybe divide it by thirds visually

You can repaint but it's hard to advise on paint colour since that's personal taste especially for toilets which I think always tend to be more "personalised" than other spaces. But you could look through magazines etc even pay attention to restaurant loos to get an idea of what you like.

I would also change the floor but make it something that goes with the walls.

Call me old fashioned but you can beat a high mounted cistern with pull chain . Yes I live in the past and yes I still use newspaper

Sorry, we don't like built in sinks. It is a very small sink at the moment.

Thank you for the ideas. Deffo not a high ceiling, 80s red brick house. Wooden decorations have been there for 20 years, didn't think they could be too high. Yes to changing the flooring, love the idea of a plant.

You have highly contrasting colours for such a small space. The green is very dark so the toilet looks really stark against it, then the orange is a huge contrast to the green, and blind looks really dark against the orange. The side walls then look really pale, as if they don't belong in the same room. The simplest thing would be to paint over the orange in something more neutral and use the same colour on the side walls. A sage green, or almond colour. Or a mustard if you want it a bit zingier.
Change the mirror for a bigger one with a shelf, it get a separate shelf below it. If there's the room you could get a shallow cabinet with a mirrored door instead.

I would try to visually try to reduce the height of the room , so would either put in some panelling to the height of the black boxed in thing behind the toilet., or a pretend dado or then choose some really gorgeous jungly wallpaper for above it. I would choose a very dark colour (dark shade of blue or green in the wall paper) to paint the panelling/ or below the dado, any other paintwork ie the back of the door, and the ceiling. I might even bring the ceiling paint down on the walls about six or eight inches because it is a high ceiling. Get some cheap self adhesive floor tiles in a dark slate colour , they are easy to lay once you have found the exact centre of the floor. It would be good to sort out some closed storage at either side of the toilet for spare loo rolls, cleaning stuff and the two(TWO!) loo brushes, and paint that too. Put privacy film on the window if it is very overlooked and lose the blind. Lose the duck and the weird masks, I wouldn’t want them watching me!

Ah maybe it's the angle of the camera making it look high ceilinged.
With pictures etc they usually look better lower than people think they should be. So at your eye level looking straight ahead whereas there's a temptation to put them higher than that. But they also tend to look better if they are NOT halfway up the wall. It's the same with painting landscapes- divide the space into thirds (roughly) rather than halfs. Agree with Viques points about paint colour but also, if you know you hate strong/dark paint colours and really like pale whites and blues for example you can make that work. You are the one who will be staring at it each day. It's most important that the colours go together well (either because they harmonise or contrast in a nice way) whereas at the moment there are too many different things going on.

I second the ChatGPT idea, if you download the app onto your phone, you should get about 8 images out of it in 24 hour period without paying. You can essentially brief it like you would an interior designer, and then share the image. The one thing I would say is be absolutely clear to it to not change any of the proportions of the room, or move the window, or anything like that! You can also say to keep the bathroom suite the exact same one, sometimes you can look at what looks like a good image, but then you realise there’s some fundamental change which is either beyond budget, or just wouldn’t work. It’s really useful! I’ve used it loads over the last month or so. It will really help you bring the ideas together, and as you can see from the poster above, it can be really effective.

On an aside, I hope you don’t mind me asking this, but what width this room? I’m currently planning a downstairs bathroom, and working out how it will look at the potential width which we will be able to get out the space, which we don’t fully know yet!

Don't know what your budget is like, but you could get a carpenter to box the pipework in, both along the wall and under the sink. This is what ours looks like (unpainted currently - the green is moisture-resistant MDF).

I would paint the whole room the same colour. As you appear happy to be bold then I’d say go dark.
small rooms can look great with moody colours. At the minute it looks too busy and narrow

Not sure how much you want to change and spend but Chat gave me these options.

You mentioned the pipework. Ours is the same, painted same colour as walls. If it bothers you, you could get it boxed in. I'd say paint the same colour, whatever your personal choice. If flooring is old, you could change, that will freshen it up. I think ours was £180 last year, he did leave old laminate underneath though to keep it easy, toilet was sited in top. Maybe a new blind.
