No motivation when I'm not in work!

I have this week off work. Normally a working day consists of:

Wake up (4.45am)
Shower
Breakfast
Hoover house top to bottom, clean kitchen/bathroom. Deal with laundry.
Leave for work 7.30am.
Finish work at 4.30.
Call at the shop on the way home for ingredients for tea.
Cook tea and eat around 6/6.30 pm.
Finish any chores/take kids to hobbies etc.

Like I said I am off work this week and I feel like I can't function! Cleaning the house seems like a massive task, I normally easily do it all before work ffs....its like all motivation has seeped out of my soul. Making a meal seems like a huge undertaking. Is anyone else like this? I feel more tired doing less than I do with a packed day and I'm normally running on empty/exhausted. I was so looking forward to chilling at home but I just feel.....awful.

Do you need to hoover and clean so much every day? Do it less often or hire a cleaner.
Plan your meals and do an online shop to avoid having to go every day.
Enjoy your week off!!! Your working days sound hectic and incredibly full. You need rest.

Getting up in the middle of the night to clean your house from top to bottom daily is bonkers. Your body/mind has probably gone into some self induced recovery mode.

Lottapianos · 02/09/2026 12:39

Sounds like you're absolutely exhausted. Your daily schedule sounds jam packed and with lots of running around.

Can you do more relaxing things this week rather than more of the same? And are you interested in changing your usual daily routine so that things are less frantic?

NeverLooksFlippingClean · 02/09/2026 12:53

My working day routine has been the same for 20+ years now! To be honest it feels like the only way I can keep in top of everything, we have two dogs and a cat hence the incessant flipping hoovering.
I can't afford a cleaner/outsourcing of any kind...sadly I am time poor and cash poor which is possibly part of the problem.

Normally I am okay but this time being off work seems to have floored me, perhaps a case of the less I am doing the less I want to do?

So what happens if you don’t do it everyday. What happens if you only hoover half the house or hoover every other day. Why do the kitchen and bathroom need cleaning every day? Why are you shopping for food every day? So many questions I know but you seem to be operating the most labour intensive techniques and then wondering why you’re broken now. You could get a little robot cleaner and get groceries delivered and give yourself a bit of a break.

Listen to your body and sleep for this whole week.

Then find ways to give yourself two hours more sleep each night. Get a robot hoover. I have one that sweeps and mops and cleans itself on a schedule every day. It really really helps.

Stop going shopping every day. You are probably killing yourself with unnecessary work. You're describing 16 hours of incessant toil every day. You will give yourself heart disease. www.who.int/news/item/17-05-2021-long-working-hours-increasing-deaths-from-heart-disease-and-stroke-who-ilo

Nothing will happen. The house will be grotty and won't feel as comfortable to me.
I shop daily because we don't have loads of freezer space and I don't know what evening meal we will all fancy on any particular night.
My point is I feel okay (tired but functional!) with my usual daily routine, it's only now I'm not following that routine that I feel ill/tired/unmotivated.

I have that sort of crash if I have a week off after being too busy for too long - I think that's pretty normal! It's your body telling you to show down. I don't crash on a week off if life has been ticking along at a sustainable pace.

I'd say you keep yourself too busy usually and totally agree with other posters that you seem to make life much more difficult than it needs to be, resulting in you not having the energy to enjoy your time off! You're definitely not time poor if you manage to fit in 2-3 hours of cleaning/shopping a day.

cloudtreecarpet · 02/09/2026 21:34

That level of cleaning sounds more like an obsession than a necessity.
Do you live with others/have neighbours? And aren't they bothered by the sound of the hoover so early every day?

I think your lack of motivation comes from feeling tired & burnout by your usual routine.
Maybe think about what changes you can make. Perhaps some exercise or meditation each morning instead of cleaning might help?

Dontlletmedownbruce · 03/09/2026 07:06

What time do you normally go to bed OP? Getting up that early seems madness to me but then I do a lot of work at night and don't get to bed til midnight so I guess it's the same in reverse. The only difference is I clean a lot less. If you did hoover and bathrooms every other day and gave yourself 30 mins more sleep you'd be happy.

I know that's not what you are asking. I get very lazy the less busy i am. I am off for 8 weeks every summer, I have 3 kids so it was always more like work but as they hit teens I have lots of free time. I often put off going to get groceries for 2 days because it feels like so much hassle. Getting up and showering takes about an hour and a half. I do less cleaning cos I feel so tired. The first week I'm usually genuinely tired and have a lot of big tasks set aside, the laziness kicks in about week 3. By 8th week I just about manage to prepare a meal all day. This is why unemployment and even retirement scare me. I'll fill the day doing one stupid thing and feel tired all the time.
