Tips for helping an older cat get used to a new cat flap

Have a 11 year old cat who has always used a cat flap.

Had a new door fitted yesterday, with a new catflap.

Cat wont use it!!!! First pushed it open to show him and he climbed out.

But since he just wont push it to go in and out.

Ive put him outside this morning and determined to make him use it if he wants to come in

Any suggestions on getting him to use it?

Hold it wide open with a clothes peg for a few days. Then move the peg lower down the door so there's still a gap visible but cat needs to push the flap a little to get out. You'll need to swap the peg side depending if the cat is in or out.

I think you keep showing him, the same as you would a cat you were trying to introduce to one for the first time. If it comes to it, open it as much as you can for a couple of days - that way it'll get his scent on it.

If the flap is higher than his previous one, then might be worth putting a little step (something like a paving slab) on the outside.

Jokingly, my two will use a cat flap, but they much prefer a human slave to let them in and out!

Hold the cat flap open and sit with the Dreamies on the other side of it, to entice him out/in.

Yeah he cracked it tonight let himself in 😂
