Tell me about hand held steamers, instead of an iron

Please tell me if hand held steamers would work on school shirts, instead of an iron? What do i need?

You need a bottle of distilled water first of all.

Really? What for??

Because of limescale furring it up and causing white marks.

Love mine. I pop the shirts/ clothes in dryer for a few minutes hang out , then just a quick steam when dry.

Depends where you live. I dont mind mine. Ok for a quick freshen up. I used one in an hotel, thought it was so good, I have asked for one for my birthday.

Well I do live in a hard water area it’s true but when I was looking in to buying one it said essential everywhere. My ordinary iron with steam function thingy was always puffing out a scaly residue.

I bought a Phillips one thinking it would be the answer to my lazy prayers. It wasn’t. I buy ds the non iron school shirts and they’re fine - he also wears a jumper over them anyway but I don’t care enough about school uniform!
If he does he’s welcome to iron them himself but so far he has not been bothered enough…
I bought it for some of my shirts I keep buying because I love them until they’ve been washed and need ironing so they just remain hung up. The steamer will sort of get the worst of the creases out but it really doesn’t do a particularly good enough job by itself.

I bought one recently. I thought it might encourage me to get past my reluctance to do the ironing. Unfortunately it didn't <sigh> It's OK but it's not the quick solution I hoped it would be.

I have the Tefal Pop it's fab. Use tap water and it's still going well a year later with daily use.

Saves so much time. I also got a pad that hangs on the door to protect it when steaming.

@Reluctantadult I’ve had one for a couple of years and love it, I haven’t used an actual iron since getting it. Saying that, you won’t get crisp collars and cuffs with one but it’s been fine for dc school shirts.

mine was the cheap aldi one. it’s great for flimsy type clothes like school type shirts, summer dresses, thin things etc but jeans come up looking wrinkled. so it’s put up with that or get the iron and board out for those thicker garments.

I bought a new iron recently and it says you can use it to steam. I haven’t tried it yet

Love mine, I use lenor steam water for mine ( aware not everyone likes fabric softner type fragrance) really easy, we use it to freshen up the bit of sofa that can't be washed, mattress ect as well as school uniforms

I hang stuff on mine when I run out of hanging space on the treadmill.

I used mine only once. You need to hang item from hook on back of door (or similar) and then pull it at the bottom so it's crease-free and then steam that bit so it stays that way. Apart from school shirts (which I never bothered with - little hot sweaty bodies used to self-steam them), if I'm going to iron a shirt then I want a crease in the sleeve and ironed collar and cuffs. I've found the secret to ironing is not to wear anything that needs ironing.

My mil got me one and I didn’t think it was great. I don’t tend to iron much though!

Ohh I love mine. I haven’t owned an iron in my adult life. I just hang the clothes on the back of a door and quickly run my steamer over it. Obviously it won’t do anything that requires a nice crease but it certainly makes me more presentable.

Mines just a cheap one from amazon I got about 3 years ago
