Got a letter from Specsavers addressed to someone who has never even lived in my house!

Before anyone shouts at me for opening her post, the envelope has a big green Specsavers logo on it. It’s addressed to a ‘Mrs Jo Jones at 10 Bloggs Street’. But she’s never even lived here! She used to live on the street at number 5 but moved away maybe 6yrs ago? We’ve lived here for 10yrs and before we moved in, the last time the house had new people living in it was back in the 70’s!

Very odd how the letter ended up here. How did they manage to get the house number wrong? 🧐 It wasn’t the postman who delivered it to the wrong house either, it has our house number on it.

Probably just accidentally selected the wrong house number from a drop down menu?

Specsavers will have got the name and address from somewhere - a bought in mailing list most likely. It may be a sign of identity fraud.

What you should do is contact Specsavers data protection officer. This is best done in writing to their DPO email address and tell them
-this person has never lived there and the name and address should be removed from their database.
-you are concerned that this is an identity fraud and ask them to disclose how they got this name and address and if it was a bought mailing list the company that they bought it from.

I helped a friend with a similar problem. No one else had lived in her house for 60 years. It tracked back to a fraudulent loan application. It took three steps in her case - the spam mailing (insurance advert) who disclosed a third party mailing company who in turn said they had got it from the loan company.

It is probably more common than we know and it is only if you are in that situation like you are and my friend where because of the length of time only you have lived in the house, you are tipped off there is a likely fraud underneath it. Most people will dismiss it as mail for a previous owner.

Generally if you get stuff like this and its for previous owners, mark it return to sender and "remove from mailing list" and put it back in the post box to return it, to stop the spread as mailing lists get sold on and on.

It’s just a mistake. A non issue.

Its a simple computer error not some conspiracy either write not at this address and repost or just put it in the bin it really doesn't need this much thought

Report immediately via 101 - it could be the "final piece of the jigsaw"

Get an injunction against Specsavers so that they don't further ruin your life.

Or...open bin, put letter in bin. Get on with your life.
