Should I call 999 for partner acting aggressively and not sleeping?

I know that I’m not posting this in the correct board but was hoping for some quick replies if possible. My boyfriend seems to be having some sort of breakdown and I’m not sure if this is something that would be considered an emergency.

He really isn’t himself and also hasn’t been sleeping. No self harm but super angry and aggressive and I think might be having delusions but I’m not sure. I’m really worried about the lack of sleep especially.

Ive left for now because he was getting aggressive and refused to talk to someone or go to a&e because they might be able to help. I was going to ring the gp first thing tomorrow but I think I need to do something today as he’s never been like this with me before.
He doesn’t have family and his closest friend is in the US so I have not been able to reach them yet to ask if this has ever happened before.
Is this something that I can call 999 for or would this be am considered a waste of time as he hasn’t given any indication that he might harm himself?

Ill probably call 111 anyway but I really have no idea what to do because I’ve never experienced something like this before and I’m unsure what to do.

Call 999 they should be able to take him for MHA evaluation

Dululu · 31/08/2026 11:37

Yes this sounds like a medical emergency if out of character, I would call as it sounds like he isn’t able to judge for himself.

Seashorewaves · 31/08/2026 11:37

I would call 111 and ask for advice.

YouLookLikeStevieNicks · 31/08/2026 11:38

Can you give a bit more info OP, how long has he not slept for? In what way is he acting aggressive? Has he been drinking or anything like that?

111 have a mental health option, that may be better than 999. It would be a waste of time to get an ambulance out if he's going to refuse to be seen.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 31/08/2026 11:40

111 and 2 for urgent mental health support.

Twwing · 31/08/2026 11:41

I’ll try 111

Call 999 they should be able to take him for MHA evaluation

The police do not have powers to do this.
They can remove someone from a public place using Sec 136 of the MHA if they believe the person is a serious risk to themselves or others. They cannot remove someone from their own home involuntarily. To do this requires a much more complex process.
OP, please call 111 first, there is a mental health option. They can put you in touch with local crisis services if necessary.
It is very difficult to access help for someone who refuses to be seen until things really are at crisis point (that threshold is very high) but it sounds like things are close to that already.

mindutopia · 31/08/2026 12:21

Do you live together? Or does he live alone? I think this becomes a police issue if he is acting aggressively towards you and you can’t safely go home. It’s very different if you have your own home and you can secure it in case he comes around.

Ramblingaway · 31/08/2026 12:30

Sounds like it's potentially a manic phase of bipolar disorder, so you definitely do need to get him some help. I hope that you have success with 111, but as above, if you share a house and at any point feel unsafe, then do ring 999 and ask fur the police, especially if you have children in the house as well. It happened to my friend with her husband, and the police did get him assessed and transferred to a mental health hospital (I think it's section 137 if it is from home not a public place but I'm very rusty on the sections).

Greybeardy · 31/08/2026 13:10

I would definitely get some advice at least via 111. If you’re in danger or he is then 999 would be completely sensible. He’d probably need a few medical things thinking about before going for a psych type assessment if this is a first episode (including things like encephalitis).

Itsnotgirlinterrupted · 31/08/2026 14:00

I believe a 137 requires a warrant. Happy to be corrected.

136 is for public place.

Ovalframes · 31/08/2026 14:04

It sounds like either manic phase of bipolar or cocaine. Either way he could be a risk to himself or others. I guess I would start with 111. They might be able to ask the police to do a welfare check.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 31/08/2026 14:13

Police wouldn’t probably do a welfare check as they are not mental health professionals unless someone is at high risk of injury/death.

Twwing · 31/08/2026 16:17

Thank you. He is being detained for assessment.

I hope you’re holding up ok op.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 31/08/2026 21:00

I hope you are okay. He will need things like clothes and toothbrush etc. If he is being detained. Has he had any drugs or antibiotics recently? You can call the hospital and speak with staff there.

Just wanted to confirm that 111 and mental health emergency were the right options in our case. Just in case it helps anyone wondering about it next time 💙
