I won't be able to heat my home..

Due to the war in Iran, I simply cannot afford to heat my home.

I'm on heating oil, and since day 1 of the war, oil prices have risen sharply. I've just done a quick calculation, and to fill my tank today it will cost £550, the day before it all kicked off it would have cost £260. I'm just hoping and praying we have a mild winter. 🙏 Just venting.

Things won't get better and prices definitely won't go down anytime soon.

I would seriously look into solar panels & get a good tariff for electric. We've done this, together with electric underfloor heating. Our day to day gas & electric bill has halved... it would be even less if it wasn't for the ridiculous standing charge.

Yes, the Op who cannot afford a couple of hundred pounds extra oil costs is absolutely in the position to install underfloor heating 😂

Boreded · 17/09/2026 13:52

Good news is that it is going to be a mild winter so maybe not as much of an issue as it could have been for you this year.

Bad news is that it’s because of El Niño so we will have flooding and lots of other countries will suffer with wildfires (causing animal and habitat loss), or flooding (loss of homes).

I looked the other day as well. Normally I buy oil in August as it's cheaper (in normal years) but I wasn't around to check the prices then. So I looked last weekend, and I couldn't believe the price.

Luckily I have half a tank left at the moment, but the moment I pop the heating on, that will soon disappear.

What with oil and the price of petrol, I'm thinking Only Fans might be a way to make some dosh. I do have gorgeous feet, and I'm perfectly prepared to squish them through jelly for a few quid !

I'm 55...is there a market for me on Only Fans?

Oil Prices are ridiculous right now, but they fluctuate so much it’s worth checking almost daily.
I managed to buy 500 litres few months ago for around 65p per litre, but a few days later it was back up to 87p.
I dislike being at the mercy of prices, which seem to change at the whim of all sorts of political and economic factors.
The 500 litres I bought, together with the 100 or so litres left in the tank, will heat my home until next Spring, so when it can be bought at sensible prices it can be quite economical.
I know that doesn’t help you right now, and I hope that you will be able to take advantage of any future dips in prices.

Oh I hate to come across envious as I know it’s bad for all of us, but in the coldest months (north Scotland) I’m ordering 500 litres every few weeks 😢.

Ha ha ha 😂. I can barely afford to eat. I also have a physical job (I'm a cleaner) and dog walker so 🤷

Are you not getting extra help, money wise

OMG, that must work out expensive.

I am in a part of the East of England where we often seem to escape the extremes of weather.

I wouldn’t say we are very warm in Winter, but we layer up and it’s tolerable. I do also have a wood burner for the worst days. We normally get given wood, so are very lucky.

I don't think there is any doubt that the up and coming changes to the energy cap are going to affect most people, don't get me wrong there are some people that won't be affected but i will refrain from talking about them as it will only lead to a torrent of abuse...

I really feel for those like the OP that genuinely are trying their best to keep their heads above water and regularly get shat on from a great height by our substandard government. No one deserves to be cold over winter but the reality is that many will be suffering unnecessarily.

i Know it’s not the point of the thread but op your username couldn’t be more wrong.. read Boris’s recent article in the Express.. one of the few politicians who is talking any sense re the Iran war.

Prime Ministers are just scapegoats, the country needs someone to blame when things don't go right, Boris has been one of the best scapegoats we've had in a long time if you can see past the Covid parties...

Well, also his role in Brexit. Which isn't a factor in the price of oil as much but is a huge reason why so many people are struggling to absorb the price rises in general.

I agree 100%, leaving the EU was also a massive mistake.

I created this username when it was discovered Boris had broken lock down rules, when I wasn't able to visit my dying grandfather in hospital.

Actually reading about Johnson in Iran...
We had this in February

Boris Johnson: Iran may be months away from getting a nuclear bomb. But by refusing to let Trump use UK air bases for potential strikes, the PM is effectively backing the mullahs... WHOSE SIDE IS STARMER ON

By August he is saying the UK "could have averted US trap in Iran if they had shared intelligence" re the dangers of escalation and by "interrogating" America re it's intentions in the war (why would they have listened)

I can't find a more recent article in the Express than July. But he has moved with the wind on this issue. He thought we should be joining forces with America until it went wrong and now he is sagely saying we should have known it would and warned America. Hmmmm

Unfortunately I don't qualify for any help as I'm earning just enough, don't have children or a disability. I do get 25% off my council tax though as I'm single (I personally think this should be 50%)..but hey ho.

Changes to the energy will for sure affect people ☹️. There is and has never been a cap on heating oil though so we’re completely subject (stuffed) by the oil price markets.

The Orange Fart has a lot to answer for. I remember when it all kicked off in the middle east and he was confident it would be over in a few weeks. Yeah right...how many month's has it been? And how much richer has he become? God it makes me so so angry.

He went into it presuming other countries would join in, which they didn’t.

Solidarity. I too have been boiling kettles to wash myself. Just checked the prices of oil again today. Still can't afford it. 97p per litre plus VAT.

What a shit show. Work every hour god sends, and still can't afford the bills. Let's hope we have a mild winter.

You are already boiling kettles to wash yourself? But you began the thread thinking that the price had tripled when in fact between 30-60% increase. So surely your budgeting now looks a bit better because there’s a heck of a lot of different between a 300% increase and a 30-60% increase!
