I won't be able to heat my home..

Ihateboris · 31/08/2026 11:00

Due to the war in Iran, I simply cannot afford to heat my home.

I'm on heating oil, and since day 1 of the war, oil prices have risen sharply. I've just done a quick calculation, and to fill my tank today it will cost £550, the day before it all kicked off it would have cost £260. I'm just hoping and praying we have a mild winter. 🙏 Just venting.

How many in your family?

3 always here, two more regularly here in the daytime. Dh wfh 3 days per week. It's a very old stone cottage.

Jk987 · 19/09/2026 10:17

Dont you husband and children (if they’re adults) contribute? it’s one lot of £260 so something can be sold or subscriptions cancelled to cover it. Plus a credit card.

My property is very old with high ceilings and sash windows that are not energy efficient. Even with the heating on, it can take hours to get to 18 or 19 degrees. Please don't suggest that I relocate as this would be false economy for many reasons.

In any case, my point is that I can't afford the minimum 500L order (unless I don't pay my other (more important) bills.

I wasn’t going to suggest that!

You have been asked a number of times- how long does a tank last you?

500L would probably last two months in winter.

If it was the same price as last year… would you have purchased by now?

Yes, in October last year it cost me £238. Today it would cost approximately £600.

But up thread you said that you had been grossly out by what you thought the increase was. It’s wasn’t trip or double but more like 30-60% in rear

The figures speak for themselves. At the end of the day, I, and many, many others like me, cannot afford the initial outlay.

October 2025 1500 litres would have cost £840

Today it will cost £1360

Apologies, 60% increase, not tripled.

Here

So according to the figures you posted up thread… 500l should be £453 not £600

Here

Yes, and, alas, having done the sums, I still can't afford the 500 L minimum order.

Since the 2nd of September it has increased from £463 to £600?

I feel your pain, it is very real.

Just got a quote for 800 litres for our 1000 litre tank. In winter this would normally last between three to four months. Usually around £400, the quote is £1005.

Luckily we can afford it, but bloody hell. The heating has been off since February, we only use the oil for hot water and have a quarter of a tank left.

We will be burning any sort of wood that we can find in the log burners as we need to make the oil last as long as possible.

Trump is a mentally incompetent arsehole.

It's out of control now isn't it? I fear it's not coming down anytime soon

Correct. Companies and areas vary.

You began the thread tasting prices has tripled

Turned out when you paused and actually looked in to - not tripled at all. Increased by 60%

I think you are getting yourself in to such a panic that you’re not actually looking at the reality. Has there been a big jump? Yes. Is it remotely 300%? Not even close.

So the company that you buy from… in the space of less than three weeks, the price has increased from £453 to £600? That makes no sense and isn’t reflected in the published figures.

I suspect that a great deal of the problem is the rapid fluctuations in prices.
I’ve just checked and the best priced supplier would charge £582.65 - £603.70 for 500L today. That will probably change throughout the day.
Oil prices have changed ridiculously. The 500 litres I bought last year was around 50p litre ( can’t exactly remember) and at one stage this year I was quoted 148p. It’s currently at 119p.

Can you honestly not imagine for just one second, that even a small increase can have a devastating effect on people's finances (especially those who were already struggling?)
