DS starts primary school next week. Very nervous but he is a November baby so is quite ready, hes been to pre school 3 days a week while I work part time so has had that leading up to it hes used to classes other kids etc

But parents teachers anyone - top tips please, is there anything I can be doing to help him transition to school and enjoy it?

I've done lots and keep speaking positively about it and he does in return so he is looking forward to it! He does lack confidence away from me and DH and did in pre school and is quiet so I have encouraged putting his hand up so the teacher knows if he needs something etc but I get to see his teacher before he starts so I can raise this then etc.

But just want to see is there anything else I can be doing to help prepare

Don't make a massive deal out of it I'd say. Are some of his preschool chums going to the same place? That should help him settle in.

Oh and make sure you tell him you'll collect him at the end of the day! Many moons ago we had a friend who'd discussed with their dc that school started with reception and continued until they were 16. On their first morning of reception they looked a bit wistful and tearfully asked parent if they'd remember to collect them when they were 16 Grin

Starting School by Janet and Allan Ahlberg is a nice book to read together.

And remember to seem confident and happy yourself on the first day ( you can cry after you leave the playground!)

The more of a big deal you make it, the more uneasy they’ll be and more likely to struggle.

Tell them what’s going to happen but in an excited way, don’t make your child nervous.

Set your daily timetable to that of the school now. Wake up and breakfast at the expected time. Something to earn and drink at the same time as recess. He must go to the toilet, too, and wash hands properly. Then do the same for lunch time.

Just get his little body clock into the routine.
