Looking for somewhere new to retire to

kfl · 30/08/2026 15:34

I am looking to move house in the next 18 months. I have decided to relocate and start this new chapter somewhere fresh.

Can anyone help me decide where to move to, please. My criteria are:

picturesque
not too far from the sea
not to far from a major city
good healthcare nearby
smallish, friendly community

I'm happy to look anywhere. The country is my oyster.

Lytham, Lancashire is beautiful. On the coast!

What type of property are you looking for?

Cotopaxi · 30/08/2026 15:52

Kesgrave / Martlesham / Woodbridge area in Suffolk?

It depends how much budget you have for a house.

Rox1701D · 31/08/2026 10:00

Somewhere in East Lothian. Sunny Dunny (Dunbar) or North Berwick perhaps. Train to Edinburgh very easy.

BlackeyedSusan · 31/08/2026 22:03

What sort of weather do you like/hate? Use that to shape your choices.

2026letsgo · 31/08/2026 22:12

What will you be adding to the community you are retiring to?
Whats stopping you retiring where you already are?

Muchtoomuchtodo · 31/08/2026 22:13

Vale of Glamorgan fits the bill nicely

Yes. Especially Penarth, but it’s not cheap…

As someone who had to relocate when retired, think about your social network..it is vital to build that as we get older…for so many reasons we now know

so a plug..think about joining the U3A ( university of third age). When you’re shortlisting areas, go on line and check out where the nearest U3A is and what activities you may be interested in. Some are tiny groups, and some like ours have 1500 or more members and 90 plus interest groups. It is also generally cheap! Interest range from physical activities, arts and crafts, languages, literature, outings etc etc. open to all ages if retired or semi retired.

I have, and over what is now 5 years, have massively changed my social life. Im naturally an introvert and had to really force myself to get out. But now I have a big group of genuine friends and am really part of our local village/town community.

area around west Cheshire, west Lancashire, parts of Merseyside like the east side of the Wirral or up Sefton coast, are great for accessing all parts of country, coast nearby etc. I lived in west Cheshire and could get to 4 national parks all within 1 hour 45 mins for day trips, if you like the outdoors!

rains more in west though. But up north you’ll avoid those hellish hot southern summers to come!

as for good health care…you’ll get good and bad anywhere in country now…you can be by a local general hospital like I am, but be sent to any number of hospitals further away for various investigations or treatments. I’ve been to 5 hospitals over last 2 years for 3 different conditions …some good , some not so good…be realistic on that one I’d say.

Church Stretton Shropshire
stunning , on a train line, very active and interesting community. Property is reasonably priced, many with gorgeous views of the Long Mynd

Healthy budget. I'd be looking at a 3 bedroom house.

So much to think about.
Weather - I don't cope well in heat - Im in the SE currently and this summer was brutal. Also not a huge fan of rain.

What do I have to offer? - good question. I'm very good at pitching in and helping out for events (was on school PTA, have volunteered to help at local fete etc, was on village hall committee etc). I am probably more on the extrovert side so I like meeting people. I love learning. I have family in / near Manchester, Liverpool, Durham, Edinburgh, Oxford, London & Somerset.
What's stopping me retiring here? - My ex and his mistress. Living near them is a total head fuck. I have lots of friends here but I will stay in touch with them no problem.

How old are you now? Are you retiring at 67?

There is a vast difference in house prices across the UK.
What is your budget- healthy could mean £1M to some people but £350K to others.

Where have you been in the UK that you like?
Near any national parks?
The coast?

Do you have children? Do they feature in the location choice?

Cotopaxi · 01/09/2026 13:25

East Anglia has the least amount of rain in the country, and when the wind is from the east, there's nothing but the North Sea and the flat low countries between you and Siberia so it can get fucking cold.

RainRainKeepComing · 01/09/2026 13:28

I'd choose a village or small town near York or Harrogate.
Trains from York - tick
Shops- tick
Coast - not too far- tick
Friendly Yorkshire people - tick
House prices - on the medium side unless York city centre.
York hospitals- tick- heard some good reports

Staffygirl · 01/09/2026 14:05

Topsham - a town just a few miles from Exeter.

Nice but pricey.

I was going to say Deal in Kent. Nice small seaside town with a lot of activities and an older demographic but if you don't want the South East/heat maybe not the best option :).

I moved to Deal from London and I was also looking at Scottish seaside towns: North Berwick is supposed to be a lovely place to live and easy travel to Edinburgh.

But the OP says she has a healthy budget, so I thought this would be ok?

placemats · 01/09/2026 14:39

Tips for retirement.

GP
Dentist
Hospital
Good transport links

When I was in my 20s owned a house near to the sea and was a tourist area. By six years of living there I was thoroughly fed up with the tourists and my next move was to London. Touristy places is what I would avoid.

Somewhere in Scotland?

placemats · 01/09/2026 14:41

Liverpool is a good call. Lovely coastal areas and New Brighton is good.

24Dogcuddler · 01/09/2026 14:47

The Solway coast is beautiful. People are very friendly and property is cheap. Cockermouth has lovely independent shops.
Doesn’t get too busy even in peak season.
Not far from the lakes.

Didn't say it was unaffordable just pricey, relatively. Nothing much for under £650K last look.

A decent hospital is a must as you mature
