Exploding drinking glass.

Sorry probably a very boring topic but i am a bit shaken. I was just loading the dishwasher when a glass just seemed to spontaneously explode. It was one with a sort of like cut glass base. Shard of glass have gone over every corner of our largish kitchen and even into our living area ( open plan ). 2-3 metres away so not just like a normal glass shattering when you catch it or knock it on something something. feeling lucky as only a couple of minor cuts on my arms but thinking I could have been blinded with the force of it. Just wondered if anyone else had had experienced this ? Glass was not hot or damaged as faras I know. .

Yes, I've had that happen a couple of times. Twice just putting an empty glass down in the sink. Once sat in a cafe. Waitress put my glass down with a bottle of coke next to it for me to pour. I poured half a glass in but it exploded as soon as my hand touched it to lift it.

They weren't just breakages, but actual loud bang and glass flying everywhere. Proper explosions.

This can happen with drinking glasses with thick bottoms.
They shouldn't really be put in a dishwasher.
Because of the thickness of the glass it expands more slowly than the rest of the glass and causes stresses on the thinner glass part.
Eventually it reaches a critical point and the whole lot just shatters.

Yes this was a loud bang too !

I had a Pyrex jug that did that it shattered into little squares. You will be finding bits of glass for ages.

Thanks this is useful to know and I didn't know this so hopefully might help others. This one was waiting to go in the dishwasher but will have been dishwashed multiple times before.

Yes I'm worried about this as we have a dog.

Gosh you’ve brought back memories of a time when this happened as a student. I was carrying two vodka and cokes from the bar up some stairs and one of them just suddenly exploded in my hand, covering me and the stairs in glass. It was shocking. Hope you’re ok.

@Pickledonion1999 i know how you feel I have cats….just go round really thoroughly with the vac under furnishings and what not it should be okay, then maybe a sweep over with a swiffer/broom.
