Eating out and speakerphone calls

I'm on holiday abroad at the moment eating out in local restaurants. The last two evenings a table near me has had a lengthy video call on speaker phone while waiting for their meal. They have both I think been Italians if this makes a difference, so I've not been able to understand the conversation.

I think this is very rude, though I know social norms are changing. Both times I've said nothing but was annoyed. Chances are it will happen again on this holiday. Would you say anything, or just tutt quietly about their rudeness, or do I just actually have to get over myself and accept most people consider this normal acceptable behaviour now!

Thank you i will 😊

Just editing to say I don't accept any of the above as it's an absolutely ridiculous concept but I definitely will get on with my day 🤪

All the emojis arent fooling anyone. Being deeply selfish and belittling toward the comfort of others is the opposite of happiness.

Point 100% reinforced - You guys are genuinely all clearly deeply insane special needs on this thread 🙈

Sometimes emojis are the only way 🤣

Actually just reread the thread title and realised that maybe not everyone is insane on this thread as I don't disagree with the thread title and have said from the start I didn't.

So it's really just the angry grumptons with the poor comprehension skills who are insane 😂

I also don’t understand why the person on the other end of the call would want everything they say being broadcast to all and sundry. I’d be extremely annoyed if someone had me on speakerphone in a public place.

Yes, I think this too.

I that woman who goes and stands at their table and says VERY loudly, "You do realise you're in a restaurant, right?"

Good for you!

It's so sad that people think nothing of ruining the peace of others.

Imagine turning up to a quiet train carriage/bus/cafe/restaurant and thinking "I know, I'll have a loud speakerphone conversation now/watch video shorts... who the hell cares what these other people think...".

Utterly selfish.

I have to travel with my own headphones now so I can drown out the noise of idiots with my own (private!) music.

DD always wears noise cancelling headphones while travelling now.

I just bought a pair yesterday. Ime selfish anti social entitlement is making modern life full of mistrust and misanthropy. Doesn’t bode well for the future of society imo.

That does mean you risk missing announcements though. Like that the train will now be going straight past your stop, so please get off at the stop before & change.

That's a risk she will have to take, although the stations she currently mostly uses are Liverpool Lime Street (a terminus) and Sheffield (a busy mainline station).
