My brain is sending me round the bend when I'm asleep.

Just posting to see if anyone has experienced something similar.
This is really starting to piss me off.

The week or so I have been having the most vivid, easy to recall, specifically upsetting dreams I've ever had in my life. And they seem (I know they're probably not) sooooo long. They're really detailed and fucking harrowing. And I don't know why it's happening all of a sudden.

I've had ones about having medical procedures where it's gone horrendously wrong, or I had one the other day where I thought I was getting a hair cut but they started operating on me.
I've had a dream about being in the middle of an earthquake on the street where I bought my first house. My mum got "swallowed up" by the earthquake and no one gave a monkeys. I could remember every detail when I woke up and felt so sad when waking up.
I lost my mum 2 years ago. Really fucking upsetting dream to have.

Dreams about physically abusive ex's coming back and me being manipulated. Ones where I've fallen out with my parents and the emotions in the dreams are SO strong. Just exhausting. Every night.

I've got a history like everyone else, it why so horribly specific and why now?
I've just come back from a long haul trip so am a bit jet lagged, but these started when I was still away.
Nothings particularly changed, yes I'm sad about all these things but I've had good therapy and sertraline has been life changing for me. I'm ok at the moment. Had a great holiday and back to work next week.
Has anyone just had a random period of really vivid, upsetting dreams? It's how it's every dream, every night. Fucking horrible.
Just out of the ordinary how much they're affecting me.

Thank you in advance.

Yes, i do randomly get dreams like this, but not one after the other. I think I wake myself up if a dream is too disturbing (after a while) or tedious. I think you only remember dreams if you wake up during them, is it possible thats what's happening?

I have been having really vivid dreams recently. Very detailed and often disturbing. I have parkinsons disease and it's apparently a side effect of the medication. I just wondered if you had started with new medication?

WimbleOfWombledon · 28/08/2026 17:08

Are you on any medication? Sertraline gives me crazy realistic dreams

Quartzfairy · 28/08/2026 17:11

Are you taking any supplements? Magnesium does this to me!

Meds
Food
Stress
Being too hot
Sleeping on your back

All reasons why I get vivid dreams or sleep paralysis

I had a spell of this which I put down to another of the joys of menopause.

It's gone now, but I think it was just another of my symptoms. You've got my sympathy, but I never found a solution.

BurgoMasto · 28/08/2026 17:33

Yes I'm on sertraline 150mg, but have been on that dose well over a year and it's been good.
I'm 45 and do have night sweats etc so I'm sure I am too hot at night which doesn't help. But thats been the case for a couple of years too.

I think it's just the frequency and intensity of them all of a sudden. It's so shit waking up every day feeling a bit traumatised

Thank you for replies ☺️

I think I've pretty much always woken up during my dreams? I don't remember any of my dreams having a conclusion 😂 is that normal? I don't know 😬

I think @Hatty65 might be right...
More than likely just another peri menopause symptom that invades my fucking peace.
