Virgin experience as leaving gift...

RunRunfaster81 · 27/08/2026 22:02

I am leaving my current job tomorrow. One of my co workers has been organizing my leavers collection and gift, shes not asked for anyone else's input from all my team.
I was told today what my gift is because she said they are all annoyed there was no input into it. I don't want to sound ungrateful but shes got me a virgin experience voucher. i have no idea what ill spend this on, dont want to hot air balloon or helicopter ride. spa day maybe but seems so over priced.
Im on my own with DD11 so could do something with her?
Any advice please

Afternoon tea might be on it

Talisin · 27/08/2026 22:07

You can do some theatres with them. Abba Voyage for example, if that sounds like something you and your daughter might enjoy together.

Quite a few years ago now but I remember it vividly, it was with the experience company Red Letter Days and I was gifted a Meet a Lion package (this was before it was unfashionable), I do not know why as I am not really a wildlife or specifically cat lover.
The lion escaped from the holding room and charged at me and I was knocked unconscious, when I came round the lion had been darted with a tranquilizer and I was pulled out. Absolutely terrifying and all I was offered was a hot air balloon the following weekend. I told them no chance

Blimey. That was definitely an experience. I would hate to be given one of these vouchers as I doubt there's anything there I want to do locally. I would rather have an Amazon voucher or a bag of cash.

RunRunfaster81 · 27/08/2026 22:25

Yes red letter days too, I remember them. Im a bit annoyed because she hasnt asked anyone else what they think id like. whereas the other lady thats leaving has a lovely hamper and bracelet.
I looked at Chessington for us, There is also Paddington theatre show I am going to look in to

There's sometimes recipe boxes available. Everything else feels like a chore because you have to arrange them and go somewhere. Reminding me I've got an afternoon tea one from last Christmas to use still.

RunRunfaster81 · 27/08/2026 22:27

i am so glad it's not me being ungrateful! I would much rather an amazon voucher too!

What an awful gift.

Tbh if you can afford it, I'd give it to a charity to be auctioned off. Whoever bids for it will know is an 'experience' and you can feel good knowing its gone to a good cause?

I can see your way of thinking but she was obviously hoping you would use it for yourself or you and your dd to treat yourselves to something you might not usually do.
if I receive an Amazon voucher it just gets added to my account and ends up being spent on whatever glamourous subscribe and saves are coming up next, loo roll; rinse aid or bin bags 😂

I mean I don’t like experience vouchers myself either, I’m quite adventurous by nature anyway but any time I’ve been given these they’ve always expired because they’re faffy to book.

fumingrightnow1 · 27/08/2026 22:31

Unless you live in a major city these gifts are shit as it costs a fortune to get to anything.

Chessington is a fun day out and I’ve heard Paddington is excellent so they both sound like good choices

When I was leaving one job I was friendly with the person who did the collections and I asked her not to buy me flowers as I was going away on holiday. She spent £70 on a bouquet which I dropped off at the hospice on my way home! Fortunately there was also a cheque.

My worst virgin experience was my bf unable to undo my bra and trying to take it off by pulling it all the way down over my legs. It won't be worse than that.

They do some fab horse riding experiences if that's your thing?

Ha ha!

Just had a look and there’s afternoon tea or 2 nights in a glamping pod available, not a great gift but I’m sure you could find something.

Unless it’s a really low amount ☹️

This has made me laugh so much, It’s like a comedy sketch.
So pleased you didn’t get eaten.

Haha that's really not my idea of a chore! The gift buyer obviously didn't think it was, either.

Conversely, a gift could have been looked at as an unwanted item they have to pretend to like. People get arsey about those too, or a gift voucher is sometimes complained about for being low effort.

7238SM · 28/08/2026 09:34

I understand OP. I've had various, similar experience vouchers before and they either don't cover the cost of the experience, there is nothing within a 4hr drive (and I don't live remote), the only days are weekdays when I work or processing the voucher is difficult.

The only positive is that there is some choice, unlike if they'd bought a specific voucher for a single venue I suppose. How much is it for?

3luckystars · 28/08/2026 09:41

This is just the laugh I needed today. Sorry your team mate shafted you, I love a good hamper.

I left a job once and they gave me the most beautiful lamp and I still absolutely love it. They had written me a lovely letter to go with it and I really treasure it. Thanks for reminding me of this today x x

I love the replies, especially about the Lion tamer and the bra! Thanks for the laugh x

mindutopia · 28/08/2026 10:14

Honestly, I’d tell her that as a single parent, there aren’t many that you can actually use. Could she please exchange it for an Amazon voucher? You’re leaving the job, who cares what they think?

That said, last year I left my job with an organisation I’d been with for 6 years due to having cancer. I got absolutely fuck all from them. Not even a card or a best of luck with the rest of your cancer treatment. 😂

Walkerzoo · 28/08/2026 10:17

I hate those things too.. and would prefer an amazon voucher too.

Feel sad for the people who have contributed particularly if you don't like it.

When I read the headline I wondered where this was going🙈
