Not ready to trade my flip flops for wellies!!

I am just not.

I have 2 dogs and when I let them out the back door to toilet, I like to go and pick up their poo as soon as they do one. So I watch them, and head out to get it if I need to.

To do this I keep footwear by the back door that I can slip on and off easily. For the last few months, this has been my flip flops. During the Autumn and Winter, its my wellies.

After todays rain (the first in ages) I have had to dig out my wellies and it has just made me realise that, from now on, my go to is more than likely going to be wellies and it may well be soon time to put the flip flops away.

I am just not ready to say goodbye to Summer yet. Anyone else not feeling ready for this? 😥

I am a summer lover and just adore the warm weather, the long days, and wearing t-shirts, shorts and flip flops all the time.

My mood is low in Winter.

Anyone have any tips for getting through the cold, wet and windy weather that will no doubt dominate the Autumn and Winter?

Get some sliders [I think that is what flip flops without the toe divider are called] and wear them with socks during the winter. At home. No one wants to see that fashion travesty in public.

Then you can nip out, pick up and dispose of the poo, put on dry socks and dream of warmer weather.

If you're in the UK you've got to find something to love about the autumn and winter otherwise half your life is miserable.

Yeah I’m the same. I can find stuff to love about autumn though. Then there’s Christmas. And Jan/feb requires a holiday for me.

Second the above, or crocs! 😱

You just have to embrace and find the positives. I’m not keen on summer but don’t want to be miserable, so change my mindset

I am an absolute outdoor person and hate the dark winter however this is my survival strategy

Crocs.
Make the house really cozy. Stick a TV and some scented candles in your room and cwtch down and hibernate In the dark cold evening!
Book a holiday for February, this year Egypt, snorkelling in the red Sea in February.
Get up early and walk the dogs somewhere really open and cozy clothes.
Also, sorry to be that person, but Gym Gym Gym and yoga!
Do you live by the coast? If so, find an outdoor sauna and start sea swimming! Xx

I’m the same @ErlingHaalandsManBun I fuckin LOVED the heat; being able to pull on just shorts and a vest top every day without thinking about it, doing washing when it needed doing rather than having to time hanging it out to coincide with dry spells, being able to sit outside late at night without having to get a jumper, the bright days…

It’s been rainy and gloomy here for two days and I already want to hide under the duvet. British stoicism and embracing the misery with a positive mental attitude can get in the bin.

You get wet socks with sliders and crocs…but that’s not the point.

You can get slip on 'wellies' shoes that are quite a goo inbetween.
But I'm with you - I love the summer & I've loved this summer - hate the thought of autumn and rain coming. Although crisp Autumn days are lovely for dog walking.

I am not ready either. Have loved the summer. I live in the South-East and haven’t worn anything long sleeved since early June. I am not ready to go back to long sleeves, socks and “proper” shoes.

Gardening clogs are the best solution IME.

frozendaisy · 27/08/2026 19:18

You can get slide on gardener’s clogs that are waterproof enough to the height of grass but not wellies

the “seasons” (although a bit messed up now) happen each year - and it has been - still is a bit summer - the beginning of autumn is warm usually

autumn is softer, misty which has it’s own qualities
enjoy the different fruit dishes of autumn - stewed pears and apples - a red wine instead of white - herbal teas instead of fruit juices

read - you can escape anywhere in a book it’s like travelling for the mind

plan next years holiday

anything you want to change in the garden for next summer? Autumn is a great time to plant in trees/shrubs to let them stretch roots before spring

a warm bath with stream lets gear penetrate through you, gives your skin a steam as well, indulge with body lotion you like afterwards with decent pyjamas - decent enough you don’t need a heavy dressing gown on top until the depths of winter

watch Ted Lasso - new season but it’s easy to go from the beginning and start again (it’s feel good tv)

exercise your mind more, puzzles, instrument, language, jigsaw

Basically just try and bring what you like of summer, what do the longer hot days give you apart from less clothing? Indoors

And if you want less clothing in winter get good thermals and woollens they don’t have to be thick or many layered to be warm just need to be good

and sometimes it’s fine just to be grumpy and allow it, eventually you snap out of it and think life’s too short - I might only have 25 winters/summers/springs left I don’t intend on wasting any of them (because summer will return when it does) on wishing away 3/4 of the year
